NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's women's basketball team (14-7 overall, 7-3 American Athletic Conference) is back on the road on Wednesday when the Green Wave travels to Tudor Fieldhouse for a battle with the Rice Owls (12-10, 5-5) at 7 p.m.
QUICK HITS
Tulane's Kyren Whittington exploded for 28 points on 11-for-15 shooting to the host Green Wave in a 72-55 drubbing of visiting UAB Saturday afternoon in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Olive and Blue improved to 14-7 overall and 7-3 in the American Athletic Conference, while UAB fell to 14-8 and 5-5 in the league.
Whittington, who was 4-for-5 from 3-point range, was joined in double figures by Sherese Pittman (14) and Amira Mabry (12), who narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. The Green Wave, who dominated the overall rebounding numbers 40-26, was led on the glass by Dyllan Hanna, who had 13. Point guard Kendall Sneed stuffed the stat sheet herself, posting seven points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
UAB was led by Maddie Walsh, who scored 13 points, while Journey Armstead (12) and Molly Moffitt (10) also had double digits.Â
The Blazers never led in the game but hung tough for most of it. That is, until Whittington erupted for eight points in the fourth quarter's first three minutes, 28 seconds. That forced a Blazer timeout as the visitors found themselves facing a 10-point (56-46) deficit.Â
Tulane continued to extend the advantage in the contest's waning minutes.
The Green Wave limited UAB to just eight offensive rebounds and no second chance points. The program also entered the game leading the league in 3-point percentage defense (27.0) and yielded just a 20.8 percent clip (5-for-24) to the Blazers on Saturday.
All of that stymied the league's most potent office and kept it 15 points below its season average (70.2 per game).
CRASHING THE GLASS:Â The Green Wave leads the league in rebounds per game (40.71) and is 29th nationally. The team also leads the AAC in defensive caroms (28.8) per contest and 16th nationally.
WHITTINGTON GETS TO 1500:Â With 10 points in the win over Wichita State, Kyren Whittington landed right on 1,500 career points. She has 1,102 at Tulane and registered 450 during her freshman season at ULM in 2021-22.
FTS AND FOULS:Â Tulane has made as many or more free throws than the opposition in 14 games this season and has fouled as many or fewer times than its opponents on that same number of occasions (including seven of the last eight games).Â
KEENAN:Â Victoria Keenan paces the league (and is third nationally) with a 48.4 percent clip from the perimeter. She is also 14th in the country with 2.90 3-pointers per contest and 18th with 61 total triples on the year.
GETTING DEFENSIVE:Â Tulane leads the American Athletic Conference in field goal percentage defense (36.4), a figure that is 25th nationally. Tulane also paces the conference in 3-point percentage defense (26.7) and is 27th nationally in that statistic.
GETTING OFFENSIVE:Â The team has also been incredibly consistent in its offensive scoring output this season and now leads the league with 69.8 points per contest.
AWARD WINNERS:Â The Green Wave has won the league's Freshman of the Week six times, five by Kendall Sneed (Nov. 25, Dec. 2, Dec. 23, Jan. 27, Feb. 3). Sadie Shores (Dec. 30) collected it the other time. Sneed's total of five is three of the league's record of eight, held by ECU's Amiya Joyner.
Tulane has earned AAC Honorable Mention Player of the Week recognition seven times. Amira Mabry leads the way there with four (Dec. 23, Dec. 30, Jan. 6, Jan. 27), Sherese Pittman twice (Nov. 18, Jan. 13) and Kyren Whittington on November 25.Â
REJECTIONS!:Â Tulane registered nine blocked shots in the 68-52 win over Florida Atlantic on Wednesday. That was the most for the team in a conference game since also posting nine against Memphis on February 23, 2021 (72-52 Tulane victory).
