
Baseball Takes Final Game of Series Over Pepperdine 7-4

MALIBU, CA – The Tulane baseball team (8-3) ended the team's two-game losing streak with a thrilling 7-4 road victory over Pepperdine (3-9) on Sunday afternoon at Eddie D. Field Stadium in the final game of the three-game series.
John-Paul Sauer (1-0), in his first extended outing for Tulane, threw 3.1 innings out of the bullpen with a run allowed and five strikeouts. Will Clements was the first reliever in the game for Tulane and threw 2.2 scoreless frames with a strikeout. Tayler Montiel threw a scoreless 1.2 innings out of pen with two strikeouts. Jacob Moore recorded a pair of outs in the game with a strikeout. Michael Lombardi entered the game with the bases loaded in the ninth and one out and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to record the save. It was his second of the season.
The loss went to Pepperdine's Matt Queen (0-1) as he allowed a run in his 2.2 innings on the mound in relief.
Gavin Schulz led the Green Wave offense attack with three doubles. Tanner Chun, Lombardi, Matthias Haas, Andrew McKenna and Kaikea Harrison all had two hits in the contest. The team's runs were driven in by Rasmussen, Haas, McKenna, Good and Schulz. Schulz knocked three runs in the contest including the go-ahead run in the fifth and two huge insurance runs in the ninth. Tulane wrapped out 14 hits in the game plus walked five times.
Tulane threatened in the first inning as Lombardi picked up an infield single and was followed by a one-out double by Rasmussen, but the next two were retired in order.
Pepperdine jumped on Tulane with three runs in their half of the opening frame on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, a double play ground out and a wild pitch that brought a runner in from third.
Tulane closed the gap to two in the second as William Good grounded out to drive in Schulz. Schulz started the rally with a double. It was his first career RBI for Good.
The Green Wave put up a three spot in the third inning to take the lead as Rasmussen hit a sacrifice fly, Haas doubled and McKenna singled up the middle to each drive in a run.
The Waves tied the game up at 4 with a run in the fourth inning on a two-out single through the right side.
The Green Wave wrestled the lead back in the fifth as Schulz doubled to score McKenna and give Tulane a 5-4 advantage.
The team extended the lead and picked up two huge insurance runs in the ninth on a two-run double from Schulz.
Next, Tulane heads to Long Beach State to take on the Dirtbags on Monday, March 2, at 8 p.m. CT. The program then returns home to host North Dakota State from March 7-9 starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
