
Baseball Downed By UNO 10-5 On Tuesday

The game was decided early as the Privateers scored six runs in the opening frame and added on three more in the third and another tally in fourth. The Green Wave pitching staff held UNO scoreless for the final five innings, but the early deficit proved to be too difficult to overcome.
John-Paul Sauer (1-1) started for Tulane and surrendered four runs without being able to record an out. Wes Burton was the first man out of the bullpen. He surrendered three runs in 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Grayson Smith then entered and lasted 0.2 innings with three runs, two hits and three walks allowed. Michael Devenney was called upon next and pitched 1.1 scoreless to help settle the game. Gavin Smith entered next and was up to the task with 1.1 scoreless with a strikeout and a hit allowed. J.D. Rodriguez closed it out for the club with 2.2 scoreless with a strikeout. On the day the Tulane pitching staff surrendered seven hits and 11 walks.
Gavin Schulz led the offensive charge for the Green Wave with three hits and two runs scored. Connor Rasmussen totaled a hit, a run scored, an RBI and was hit by a pair of pitches. Theo Bryant IV had a two-hit night with a run scored. Nate Johnson reached base safely twice with a hit and a walk plus had an RBI.
The win was earned by Sawyer Toney (2-1). Toney threw 1.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts in relief of starter Hayden O'Dell. O'Dell went the first four innings with three runs allowed and four strikeouts.
The Privateers scored first with six in the opening inning. Bryce Calloway started the scoring with a bases loaded walk. He was followed by a sacrifice fly from Tristan Moore, a single from Collin Husser and a three-run home run from Jake D'Altrui.
The Green Wave answered with a pair of runs, 6-2, in the first inning on a Lombardi looping double to right.
UNO plated three more in the third inning on the bases loaded hit by pitch by Collin Loupe and the two-run home run from Matt Gonzalez to go up 9-2.
Tulane got a run back, 9-3, on the Rasmussen solo home run in the bottom of the frame.
The Privateers answered with a run in the fourth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to extend the advantage to 10-3.
Tulane tallied a run in the sixth on Nate Johnson's double.
The Green Wave finished the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a misplayed ball by the UNO shortstop.
Tulane had an opportunity to climb back into the game several times as the program stranded 11 including a pair in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Next, Tulane heads to UTSA (28-9, 10-2 AAC) for a three-game set starting on Thursday, April 17, at 6: p.m. in San Antonio.

The loss allowed the Privateers to win the Pelican Cup for the fourth time (2018, 2019, 2023 and 2025) since it was brought back in 2018 with a hiatus in both 2020 and 2021…The three hits from Gavin Schulz was his fourth game with three hits this season and his 11th multi-hit performance on the campaign…Schulz and Matthias Haas extended their on-base streaks to a season-high 12 games…The game marked only the second game this season that Kaikea Harrison did not start at shortstop.
