
Baseball Falls to UTSA 13-5

SAN ANTONIO – The Tulane baseball team (23-16, 7-6 AAC), after trailing by five runs early, nearly fought all the way back before falling to UTSA (29-9, 11-2 AAC) by a 13-5 score on Thursday night, April 17, at Roadrunner Field. The team allowed 11 of the 13 runs in defeat in a pair of frames.
Luc Fladda (2-4) started and went the first five innings with seven runs allowed on seven hits with five strikeouts. He surrendered six of his seven runs in the first two innings before settling down and throwing a scoreless frame in three straight innings. Julius Ejike-Charles was the first arm out of the bullpen. He was only able to record an out while surrendering four runs on two hits and two walks. Henry Shuffler allowed two runs in a third of an inning as the team's next reliever. J.D. Rodriguez finished this one out with two scoreless innings.
Theo Bryant IV led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Hugh Pinkney hit a home run and drove in three runs on two hits. Jason Wachs picked up a pair of base hits. Andrew McKenna, Connor Rasmussen, Tanner Chun, James Agabedis III had the team's other four hits.
The win was earned by UTSA's Zach Royse (5-4) as he allowed four runs in six innings worked.
UTSA scored first with a run in the opening inning on Garrett Gruell's sacrifice fly.
The Green Wave tied the game up in the second on Pinkney's second home run of the season.
Ty Hodge gave the Roadrunners the lead back, 3-1, in the bottom of the frame on his two-run home run. UTSA added three more later in the frame on Norris McClure's three-run home run to go up 6-1.
The Green Wave drew two runs closer, 6-3, on Bryant's two-out two run single to right center in the fourth inning.
Tulane made it a two-run game in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice ground out from Pinkney.
The bottom of the sixth was where the Roadrunners broke the game open with six runs. It started with a wild pitch with a man on third followed by a bases loaded triple from James Taussig and finished on a two-run double from Hodge.
The Green Wave cut the deficit to seven, 12-5, in the seventh inning on Pinkney's third RBI of the night.
UTSA scored a run in the seventh inning on Taussig's sacrifice fly to make the final score 13-5.
Next, Tulane plays the second game of the series against UTSA starting at 6 p.m.

The start in left field for Andrew McKenna was the first time he has appeared in the outfield this season as he had made 18 starts behind the plate…With three hits tonight, Theo Bryant IV now has 10 hits in 21 at bats in conference play this season…He also has driven in eight runs on those 10 hits…Gavin Schulz and Matthias Haas each extended their on-base streak to 13 games each walks…The loss dropped Tulane to 3-7 all-time against the Roadrunners
