
Baseball Earns Thrilling 5-3 Victory Over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The Tulane baseball team (24-16, 8-6 AAC) handed UTSA (29-10, 11-3 AAC) just their second home loss of the season with a thrilling 5-3 victory on Friday night, April 18, at Roadrunner Field.
Tulane took their first lead of the series with three runs in the fifth and added a big insurance run in the sixth to back 4.2 scoreless innings of relief between Tayler Montiel and Michael Lombardi. The two combined for just two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
Trey Cehajic started for Tulane went the first 4.1 with seven hits allowed and three runs with five strikeouts. Montiel (4-0) was the first reliever out of the bullpen for the Green Wave and went three innings with three strikeouts to earn the victory. Lombardi was inserted into the game in the eighth inning with the tying run coming to the plate and got a strikeout and a ground out to end the threat. He finished the game off with a scoreless ninth for his ninth save of the season.
Matthias Haas led the team with four hits and two RBIs. Hugh Pinkney picked up a pair of hits and RBIs. Tanner Chun tallied a pair of doubles plus scored a run. Gavin Schulz, Jason Wachs and Connor Rasmussen each had a hit. Kaikea Harrison totaled a pair of hits and a run scored. James Agabedis III walked and scored a run.
UTSA grabbed the early 1-0 lead on James Taussig's double to the gap in left center in the first inning.
Tulane tied the game up at one in the fourth inning on single to the right field by Haas.
The Green Wave took the team's first lead of the series, 4-1, with three runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Wachs, a Pinkney double and a single from Haas.
The Roadrunners drew two runs closer, 4-3, in the bottom of the frame on Broc Parmer's first home run of the season and a one-out base hit with a runner on third by Mason Lytle.
Tulane added an insurance run, 5-3, in the sixth inning on Pinkney's bases loaded ground out to first.
Next, Tulane plays the rubber match of the series against UTSA starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Matthias Haas' four hits were a season-high and his most hits in a contest since getting five knocks against Southeastern Louisiana last season (4/30/24)…He is the second player on Tulane to have four hits in a game this season along with James Agabedis III…Haas has now taken over the team lead in multi-hit games with 15…Haas and Gavin Schulz both reached safely in the game for the 14th consecutive contest…The UTSA loss was only the second of the season suffered by the Roadrunners at home as the team is now 18-2 in home contests this season…The save earned by Michael Lombardi was his ninth of the season and the 14th of his career to tie him with Zach Devito (2021-22) for seventh all-time at the school…The win improved Tulane's record to 4-7 all-time against the Roadrunners...
