Sep 19, 2025 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University sailing will be on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain this weekend to host the Sugar Bowl Open and Women's Fleet Races on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21. The Green Wave swept the Sugar Bowl Fleet Races last fall and has swept the regatta two of the last three years.
Â
The Wave is coming off a strong opening weekend to its fall campaign after sweeping through the SEISA Singlehanded and Match Race Championships as well as the Lone Star Fleet Race in Corpus Christi, Texas. By winning all three SEISA championships over the weekend the Wave secured back-to-back years with three fall conference titles.
Â
Highlighting the performance for Tulane was Ava Anderson who secured her third straight SEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship while Kelly Holthus helped lead his crew to a second consecutive Match Race title and Hamilton Barclay claimed the Open Singlehanded Championship.
Â
Tulane dominated the Sugar Bowl Fleet Races last fall on Lake Pontchartrain winning both the open and women's races. In the open fleet races the Wave had teams finish first and third led by skippers Holthus and John Wood with crews Helena English, Caitlin Briggs, and Alex Makoid. Meanwhile in the women's races Tulane placed first, fourth, and fifth as skippers Sammie Gardner and Anderson controlled the waters with crews Hope Breslin and Ella May Corckran.
Â
This weekend Sugar Bowl Open Fleet Races will feature teams from Eckerd, Jacksonville, Princeton, Stanford, and Wisconsin alongside the Wave. Over in the women's fleet races Tulane will hit the water against teams from Jacksonville, Stanford, South Florida, and Wisconsin.
Â
Racing for the regatta is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain.
