Baseball’s Late Rally Falls Short in 9-6 Loss To UAB On Friday
Mar 27, 2026 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Tulane baseball team (14-13, 2-2 American) rallied for six runs in the ninth inning but the rally came up just short in a 9-6 loss to UAB (16-10, 2-2 American) on Friday, March 27, at Young Memorial Field. The team has now won five of the last seven games.
Tulane started the ninth inning, facing a nine-run deficit but put together a furious rally that eventually brought the tying run to the plate after six runs had crossed the plate. Nate Johnson started the rally with a single. Evan Burg followed with a hit-by-pitch. Trent Liolios drove in the first run with a single. James Agabedis followed with a pinch-hit RBI single. Hugh Pinkney loaded the bases with his single. Kaikea Harrison then hit into a fielder's choice to drive in a run. Tanner Chun followed with a walk to load the bases again. After a strikeout, Tye Wood drove in a run with a single through the left side. Johnson brought the team to within three runs, 9-6, and the tying run to the plate with his two-run double. UAB stood strong and struck out the final Tulane batter to preserve the victory.
Trey Cehajic (1-3) started and went the first 4.2 innings with eight runs allowed on 10 hits for Tulane with two walks and two strikeouts. Jacob Moore surrendered a run in 0.2 of an inning with a strikeout. Caden Tarango didn't allow a run in his 0.1 of a frame with a strikeout. Michael Devenney threw 2.1 scoreless, including escaping a bases loaded jam in the seventh to allow the team to get to the ninth inning rally, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Pinkney helped lead the offensive attack with two hits and a walk. Johnson had a pair of hits and RBIs. Wood had a hit and an RBI. Harrison picked up a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Chun totaled a hit and a run scored. Jason Wachs walked twice. Liolios had a hit, a run scored, an RBI, and a walk. Agabedis scored a run, had a hit and drove in a run off the bench.
UAB's Mason Steele (3-2) earned the win for Blazers in going seven innings with just two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
UAB scored first with four runs in the second inning on a Wesley Helms' RBI single to center field, a base hit to the opposite field by Kevin Hall and a two-run double by JP Head.
Tulane loaded the bases in the fourth with no one out, but unfortunately the next three were retired on a ground out, a pop out and a ground out to allow UAB to escape unscathed.
The Blazers added a run to their lead in the fourth, 5-0, on Hall's opposite field hit away from the shift.
UAB added another three runs to the advantage, 8-0, in the fifth on a Helms single and a Hall two-run base hit.
The Blazers pushed another run across in the sixth frame, 9-0, on a bases loaded walk by Austin Pierzynski before Tulane nearly punched all the way back in the ninth.
Next, Tulane tries to even the series against UAB starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
