NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's basketball team will close out its preseason this weekend with an exhibition for a good cause. The Green Wave will host South Alabama at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday at 6 p.m. with all proceeds from ticket sales going to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief.
Tickets to the contest are just $5. A portion of concession sales will also be donated to the Red Cross to aid victims of recent hurricanes.
"At Tulane this hits a little closer to home," Tulane coach Lisa Stockton said of the hurricane relief efforts. "With all the things that we have been through, it's our chance to give back. I'm very excited to have the opportunity to play again, but more importantly these young ladies are a part of the fundraising and we want to try to help people like they helped us [after Hurricane Katrina]."
Fans who cannot attend the game can still donate to hurricane relief at this link.
The Green Wave introduced themselves to fans on Thursday night with a 78-48 exhibition victory over Loyola-New Orleans. Every student-athlete on the roster scored in the game, and the team was led by sophomore guard Kayla Manuirirangi's 15 points. Senior Kolby Morgan and freshman Kaila Anderson also reached double-figure scoring while junior Harlyn Wyatt grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Jaguars have also played one exhibition game this year, knocking off Faulkner (Ala.) University 88-44 Thursday night. Last year, South Alabama finished with an 11-20 mark and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Chyna Ellis was the team's leading scorer and rebounder last year, posting 10.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She returns for her senior season along with fourth-leading scorer from last year, Genesis Perrymond (6.7 ppg).
South Alabama leads the all-time series against Tulane by an 11-8 margin, though the Green Wave have won the last five games in the series. When the teams met most recently in 2010, Tulane got a 72-63 win over South Alabama. Before the Green Wave's current winning streak begin in 1990, South Alabama won eight consecutive games in the series.
Tulane will begin the regular season next weekend with a road trip to Maine. The Green Wave will take on the host Black Bears on November 10 at 5 p.m. central and then play either Dayton or Harvard on Saturday in Maine.
