Baseball Falls to ULL in Extra Innings, 5-2
Mar 13, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana-Lafayette scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to break a 2-2 tie and top Tulane baseball, 5-2, Tuesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave (8-9) knotted the score with a run in the sixth and a run in the eighth inning. Sophomore third baseman Kody Hoese drove in both runs and sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues scored both runs. The Ragin' Cajuns (7-9) scored a run in the first and sixth innings to lead 2-0.
Â
The Wave loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but a play at the plate on an infield grounder and a strikeout left them loaded and the score tied. ULL got two infield singles, a base hit through the infield and a two-run double to score three runs in the 11th inning. Tulane again had the bases loaded in the bottom half after a single and two hit batters, but a double play ended the game.
Â
"We had the situation we wanted – bases loaded with one out, but they got their positioning right where they needed to be," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "We loaded them up there at the end and had a chance, but it was not the result we were looking for obviously. They got some of the breaks tonight and they deserved to win. I was pleased with what I saw on the mound. We didn't just give them everything, we made them earn what they got. They came through when they needed to."
Â
The Green Wave tied the score in the eighth inning on an RBI single up the middle by Hoese. Artigues, who reached on a two-out walk, scored from second on the hit. Tulane scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth when Artigues hit a one-out triple to the right field wall and scored on Hoese's sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Â
Graduate senior Ben White (0-1) gave Tulane the relief appearance it needed. He entered the game with a run in and one out in the sixth and got out of the inning to hold ULL to a 2-0 lead. He retired 12 of the 15 batters he faced through the 10th inning, allowing just three singles in that span.
Â
White pitched 5.0 innings in relief, allowing Tulane to make its comeback. He struck out five and scattered four hits. The last hit was an infield single to start the 11th, which moved around to score. Freshman Josh Bates pitched 5.1 innings in the start and allowed two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
In the top of the 11th, after two infield singles, outfielder Gavin Bourgeois hit an RBI base hit through the infield and left fielder Zach LaFleur hit a two-run double. ULL plated a run in the top of the first when center fielder Daniel Lahare singled and moved around to score on a groundout by first baseman Kennon Fontenot. The Cajuns added a run in the top of the sixth with three straight singles, the third by designated hitter Luke Coker to score right fielder Marco Ramos.
Â
ULL reliever Dylan Moore (1-1) pitched the final 1.2 innings and earned the win. He was the sixth pitcher the Cajuns used in relief of starter Colten Schmidt, who allowed two hits in 5.0 innings.
Â
The Green Wave turn around to play host to 16th-ranked Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
