Baseball Drops Series Finale to Cincinnati, 1-0
Mar 25, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore Keagan Gillies struck out six and allowed two hits in 8.0 innings, but Tulane baseball fell to Cincinnati, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the finale of the American Athletic Conference series at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave (11-14, 2-1 American) won the series with a 5-3 victory Friday and an 8-7 win on Saturday. The Bearcats (10-12, 1-2 American) scored the lone run Sunday in the top of the first inning on a double by shortstop Manny Rodriguez. Gillies (2-3), who absorbed the tough luck loss, responded by retiring 15 straight batters to hold the score at 1-0.
Tulane recorded three hits – one each by sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues in the first inning, sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo in the fifth inning and junior left fielder Ty Johnson in the ninth.
"Keagan has pitched much better than his record shows," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "We just haven't done anything to help him. We did win the series, so we have to make sure that doesn't get lost. I was looking for more of a finishing mentality today. You have to give their pitcher credit. He kind of got into a control and we just couldn't muster anything offensively."
Artigues started the bottom of the first with a base hit up the middle and stole second, but he was stranded there. He made it to second base again in the sixth when he reached on an error and advanced on a wild pitch with one out. Gozzo lined a base hit to left center to start the fifth and Johnson singled to right field with two outs in the ninth for the only other hits of the game for the Wave.
In the first inning, Cincinnati leadoff batter second baseman Kyle Mottice worked a 10-pitch walk and scored on Rodrgiuez's doubled. Rodriguez doubled with two outs in the sixth inning and right fielder A.J. Bumpass walked, but Gillies buckled down to get a swinging strikeout to end the frame and strand both baserunners.
Gillies sat down the final seven batters he faced in the game. It was the longest outing of the season for the 6'8" right-hander from New Orleans, who has posted a 1.60 ERA across 28.2 innings in his last four outings.
Tulane returns to action Tuesday at Southeastern Louisiana with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. in Hammond, La.
