Baseball Drops Finale to Ole Miss, 6-3
Feb 24, 2019 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane Green Wave baseball team began Sunday's series finale against Ole Miss strong offensively, but by the end of the game the team couldn't keep up its early pace in dropping the series finale to the No. 10 Ole Miss Rebels 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
A three-run second inning for the Green Wave (6-2) set the tone early, with strong outing for starting pitcher Chase Solesky through five innings. But costly mistakes in the form of two Tulane errors late and Ole Miss (4-2) timely hits spelled doom for the team as they were unable to counter the three, two-run innings for the Rebels in the third, seventh and eighth innings.
"They're a good team, but I told our guys and I believe this wholeheartedly, but we got better this weekend," head coach Travis Jewett said. "We were on the wrong side of the ledger in terms of the wins and losses, but we played them tough and we'll be better for this down the road."
For the third time on the weekend Tulane out-hit the Rebels, with Sunday's tally being 11-8 in favor of the Green Wave with four different players earning multiple hits on the day. Kobi Owen led the team going 3-for-4 with a run scored. David Bedgood hit his second home run in as many games on Sunday among his two hits with an RBI and run scored, while Trevor Jensen went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI.
Solesky pitched 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks, exiting the game with the lead before Ole Miss began its rally. Robert Price (0-1) suffered the loss in the end as he allowed the go-ahead Rebel run on a hit with a walk in 0.1 innings of work. Brendan Cellucci and Krishna Raj both saw action, allowing a run each as Justin Campbell was the only Tulane pitcher to keep Ole Miss off the board in 1.2 innings pitched.
Ole Miss' Tyler Keenan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, followed by Anthony Servideo's 2-for-4 day with a pair of RBIs. Connor Green's (1-0) 1.1 innings of one-hit ball would be enough to secure the win for Ole Miss in the circle, while Doug Nikhazy (1-0) preserved the save in the ninth by striking out two and retiring all three batters he faced.
Much further along in the count that he was in the previous day, Bedgood produced the same result as Saturday as he homered to right to open the scoring for both sides in the bottom of the second. Kobi Owen singled to left as an error allowed Sal Gozzo to reach and Owen to move to second safely.
A sacrifice bunt by Acy Owen moved the two over, as Ty Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Tulane. Kody Hoese flew out to center allowing Kobi Owen to score to make it 2-0, as Jensen doubled to bring in Gozzo, while Johnson was tagged out at the plate to end the inning as the Green Wave went up 3-0.
In the top of the third, Ole Miss was able to rebound getting RBI hits from Keenan and Thomas Dillard to cut the deficit to just 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth Kobi Owen singled to left, advancing to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Acy Owen singled to right center to put runners at the corners and forcing another Ole Miss pitching change. The move paid off for the Rebels as the next two batters went down in order to end the frame.
In the top of the seventh Solesky was able to get the first batter out of the frame on a tough defensive play, but a walk to the next batter ended his day as Price came on in relief. A stolen base put the tying run in scoring position, with a single from Servideo tying the game at 3-3.
With a runner at third after a groundout, a walk ended the day for Price as Brendan Cellucci came on and gave up a single that gave the Rebels the lead at 4-3, with a strikeout ending the inning to limit any further damage.
Ole Miss took advantage of Tulane's miscues in the eighth, as the Rebels only needed one hit to get the wheels turning for a pair of unearned runs to cross to plate to go up 6-3.
Tulane will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to take on the Nicholls Colonels Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Thibodaux.
