Baseball Falls in Heartbreaker to New Orleans, 8-7
Apr 2, 2019 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane baseball team was able to battle back to tie the game and take a one-run lead in the top of the 10th, but a two-run home run in the bottom half of that inning handed the New Orleans Privateers an 8-7 win over the Green Wave Tuesday night at Maestri Field.
In the opening game of the annual Pelican Cup, the Green Wave (19-10) saw a 1-0 lead turn into a 6-1 deficit after the first three innings, as New Orleans (15-13) took advantage of three errors by Tulane in a four-run third. However, the Olive and Blue was able to weather and eventually make a game of it late, falling just short in the end.
Tulane was led at the plate by a career day for junior Kody Hoese, as the third baseman went 5-for-5 in the contest with two home runs three RBI and three runs scored in the loss. The five hits are the second most in school history and is the first time a player has had five hits in a game since Andrew Garner did in 2013 against UCF.
David Bedgood went 3-for-5 with double and an RBI, while Hudson Haskin had a double and a triple among his two hits and Trevor Jensen going 2-for-5 with a home run, RBI and three runs scored.
Connor Pellerin (2-2) struck out a career-high six batters in his 2.2 innings pitched on Tuesday but suffered the loss after giving up a hit before the game-ending home run in the 10th. Starter Krishna Raj pitched three innings and of the six runs he allowed in that time only two were earned due to Tulane errors.
New Orleans' Robert Fabelo had two hits, the last being the home run in the 10th, driving in two and scoring twice for the Privateers. Luther Woullard and Pearce Howard also had two hits for New Orleans, with Salo Iza also driving in two. Pitcher John Barr got the win, even after allowing Tulane to take the lead back in giving up a run on two hits with two strikeouts in his only inning of work.
It didn't take long for the Green Wave to set the tone as Jensen took the first pitch of the game over the center field fence to get Tulane on the board at 1-0.
Down by five heading into the fourth, Tulane was able to cut the deficit to four as Hoese belted his first home run of the day on a solo shot to left field to make it 6-2. In the fifth after Josh Bates came in and was able to keep the Privateers off the board in the bottom of the fourth, Jensen singled to center and Hoese came through again with another wall-clearing shot to make it a 6-4 game.
With an out in the seventh, Jensen drew a walk to reach first as Hoese hit a rocket to short to put two on for the Green Wave. Luke Glancy singled to right and brought in Jensen to cut the opposition lead to just one, forcing a New Orleans pitching change. On the second pitch of his at-bat Haskin doubled to left field to plate Hoese and tie the game at 6-6.
In the 10th, Haskin went deep into the count in his at bat and with a 3-2 count ripped a shot into the gap in right center to slide in for the triple to open the frame. Bedgood came through in his at bat with a single to right to give Tulane its first lead since the opening inning of the game. The team would eventually load the bases but wouldn't be able to get any extra insurance in the inning.
After a strikeout, New Orleans got a single to right and on the next at-bat ended the game with the home run to right field to seal it for the Privateers.
Tulane will be back in action on this weekend, hosting a three-game series against the Wichita State Shockers beginning Friday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
