NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 23 Tulane baseball team resumes a rivalry that dates back to 1907 this weekend, as the Green Wave open a split weekend series with the Southern University Jaguars this Friday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The series will open in New Orleans Friday night, shifting venues on Saturday afternoon to Lee Hines Field in Baton Rouge on the campus of Southern the next day, before closing out the series back at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Â
David Kahn will call all three games of the series this weekend on WRBH 88.3 FM in New Orleans, with fans being able to listen to the games on TuneIn and the TuneIn app. Live video will be provided on Friday and Sunday in New Orleans, with links to that and live stats for the weekend at TulaneGreenWave.com.
Â
Tulane comes into the weekend with a 10-2 overall record, winning each of its first three series of the year. Last weekend the Green Wave took all three games from Middle Tennessee, as the squad has dropped just one weekend game so far this year.
Â
The team has won four consecutive games, coming off of an 18-2 victory over the Texas Southern Tigers Tuesday afternoon in New Orleans. Tulane exploded for 11 runs in the first inning and cruised to the win in seven innings to improve to 7-1 at home on the campaign.
Â
Tulane looks to continue swinging a hot bat this weekend, as the team is batting .292 for the year with 118 hits. Of that number, the group has produced 23 doubles, six triples and 12 home runs, of which seven have come in the last three games.
Â
Junior Trevor Minder leads the team with a .386 batting average, producing 17 hits with 12 RBI and a .727 slugging percentage. Grant Mathews has one more RBI than Minder with 13, while Hudson Haskin has drawn the most walks of anyone on the team with 10. Through just three games since making his debut last weekend, Luis Aviles has 10 RBI on five hits.
Â
On the mound, the Green Wave are holding opponents to a .213 hitting clip, holding an ERA of 2.83. Tulane pitchers have struck out 108 hitters, allowing just 34 earned runs in 108 innings of work.
Â
The two-time reigning conference pitcher of the week in Braden Olthoff leads Tulane with his 21.0 innings pitched through three starts, sitting fourth in the country in strikeouts with 34. He has an ERA of 0.43, with a .127 opponent batting average.
Â
Olthoff and freshman Luke Jannetta share the team lead in wins with three, as the Georgia native earned his latest victory of the year on Tuesday after holding Texas Southern to a single hit in three innings. Jannetta has yet to allow a run this year in 14 innings, along with Clifton Slagel as in 11 innings has yet to give up a run with 14 strikeouts to two walks in 11 innings pitched.
Â
The Jaguars come into the series off of their fourth straight win on Tuesday, defeating the Northwestern State Demons 8-7 in 10 innings, improving the club's record to 6-6. The defending SWAC champions were picked to win the west division for the second consecutive year prior to the start of the season, edging out Grambling.
