Baseball Blitzes Southern in 16-2 win Friday
Mar 6, 2020 | Baseball
Tulane (11-2) scored in all but two innings including eight in the eighth, providing the pitching staff with more than enough support. Southern (6-7) never threatened the lead as Tulane won a fifth consecutive game overall and their 14th in a row over the Jags. Despite the comfortable margin of victory, coach Travis Jewett still pointed at room for improvement.
"We are going to have to come out and play better tomorrow," said Jewett. "It was good, don't get me wrong. When Olthoff does what he did, that helps you a little bit."
Olthoff (4-0) allowed just one run, unearned, and saw his earned run average drop from 0.43 to 0.32. He fanned 13 while walking just two and allowing only three hits. He was relieved by Clifton Slagel who threw a scoreless eighth. Robert Price came on for the ninth and registered the final three outs. Tulane pitchers allowed just four hits on the night.
"I just know to get ahead with my pitches early in counts, and then I can expand," said Olthoff. "I think this team did a little better at some points too, laying off some sliders and changeups away, but by the end of the game, I was just pounding it in."
Jonathon Artigues had three hits and two RBI, Grant Mathews had two hits with two RBI and Parker Haskin hit a three-run triple to help power Tulane to its16 runs on 12 hits.
Wilhem Allen (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, in his four innings of work. Austin Haensel and Larry Barabino combined for four innings while allowing only two runs.
After Olthoff sent Southern down in order, Ty Johnson reached on a throwing error to lead off the home first. Hudson Haskin lofted a double down the left field line, pushing Johnson to third base. Mathews made sure to capitalize on the error, driving in the first run of the night with a ground ball to the shortstop.
To lead off the second inning, Artigues singled beyond the reach of the second baseman before two walks loaded the bases with one out. Johnson fouled out to the shortstop along the left field line, but Artigues sensed the opportunity and dashed home safely for a 2-0 lead.
The Green Wave stretched the lead again in the third inning when Mathews singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Artigues came up big again with a run-scoring base hit up the middle to make the score 3-0.
Tulane blew the contest open in the fourth inning after walks to Hayden Hastings and Johnson set the table with just one out. A softly hit ball off the bat of Hudson Haskin forced the Southern pitcher into an error that scored Hastings and moved Johnson to third base. Haskin stole second base before a wild pitch saw Johnson scurry home and Haskin go to third base. Trevor Minder smacked a single up the middle to drive in Tulane's third run of the inning, expanding the lead to 6-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, Olthoff surrendered his first extra-base hit of the season, a leadoff double from Ryan Ollison. Olthoff struck out the next batter before Ollison forced a throwing error as he stole third base, scampering home to make it 6-1. Olthoff responded with another strikeout and got the third out on a ground ball to preserve his impeccable earned run average.
Tulane added two more runs in the seventh inning after three consecutive walks opened the inning. Artigues drove in one run with a ground out before Mathews raced home on a passed ball to push the lead to 8-1.
The Wave loaded the bases in the eighth on an error, walk and hit by pitch. Mathews drove in one with a sacrifice fly before singles from Artigues and Logan Stevens made the score 12-1. Parkin Haskin's triple brought in three, and Johnson hustled for consecutive triples to finalize the score at 16-1. The frame saw eight unearned runs cross the plate.
Garrett Felix cleared the left field wall for a home run in the top of the ninth, his first of the season and the only earned run for Southern on the night.
