Volleyball moves to 5-2 in Conference with a Win over Memphis

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University volleyball team battled for a comeback 3-1 win over Memphis, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-16, on Friday at Avron B. Fogelman Arena inside the Devlin Fieldhouse.Â

The Green Wave got off to a slow start but got back on track to take sets two, three and four. With the win, Tulane improved to 12-7 and 5-2 in conference play. The Wave hit .236 in the match with 56 kills, 50 assists and 58 digs.Â

Michele Urquhart led Tulane with a season high of seven kills and hit .317. She also added six digs to go with her 17 points. Three other players had eight kills apiece, Kayla Dinkins, Lexie Douglas and Yvette Burcescu. Anna Davis followed suit with seven kills of her own.Â

Douglas managed to hit a milestone in the match reaching 4000 career attacks in set one. The senior also had a season-high four aces tonight, only one off from her career best.

Setter Taylor Henigsman finished with 42 assists and five digs. She also snagged a couple of kills and an ace.Â

Mackenzie Martin suited up in the libero jersey tonight for the first time in her career. The sophomore had only seen action in two matches prior to tonight. She came away 22 digs and an ace.Â

"Really good team effort tonight," head coach Jim Barnes said "Anchored by Kenzie at the Libero position for the 1st time. Our defense is improved and is the key to us being a great team."
Tulane came out cold in set one with only 12 kills and seven errors. The score was tied 15 times and consisted of four lead changes before the Wave dropped it 25-21.

Set two was still shaky but the Olive and Blue came out on top 25-22 with 17 kills and a strong defensive performance holding Memphis to a minimal .048 clip after they hit just under .400 in set one.Â

Set three the offense joined the defense in success. The Wave hit .310 before coming out on top 25-17.Â

The final set started with a 7-0 run from the Wave with Douglas behind the serving line. Tulane held the Tigers at bay maintaining the advantage until they set went final 25-16.
The Green Wave return to Avron B. Fogelman Arena inside the Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday to take on the Mustangs of SMU for its spike out Breast Cancer game. First set starts at 1 P.M. and will be aired on ESPN+.Â
