Volleyball Drops Road Match to SMU
Nov 19, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
DALLAS, Texas -Â The Tulane University volleyball team (16-13, 9-8)Â started their road trip with a loss to the Mustangs of SMU. The Green Wave fought hard but couldn't break through the Mustangs' defense dropping three straight sets 25-11, 25-21 and 25-19.
Â
Tonight wasn't the Green Wave's most stellar night offensively, they hit .150 as a group with 33 kills. The Mustangs (15-12, 11-6) struck early, attacking at a .331 clip as a team.
Â
Sophomore Mackenzie Martin led the Green Wave with 9 kills and hit an aggressive .368. Freshman Michelle Urquhart matched Martin's 9 kills hitting .161.Â
Â
Middle blockers Anna Davis and Kayla Dinkins each picked up five kills and combined for three blocks.Â
Senior setter Taylor Henigsman did her part moving the ball with 27 assists.Â
Â
Senior Lexie Douglas carried the defense with 14 digs. Sophomore libero Sophia Ervanian chipped in from the back row with 12 digs of her own. Defensive specialist Jillian Dits grabbed nine digs in the match.Â
Â
The night got off to a rocky start in set one. The Wave let a 5-0-point run slip, bringing the score to 10-6, but the hole was too big to dig out of and the Olive and Blue went down 25-11.
Â
Set two was a turning point for Tulane. The score was knotted up 11 times before ultimately going to SMU. The Wave had 16 kills in the set, over double their number from set one. The set went final at the closest margin of the night, 25-21
Â
Set three was a copy-cat killer of the second. Tulane was neck and neck with the Mustangs through 14-all. SMU pulled ahead in the end to take set three 25-19.
Â
Tulane will be back in action Sunday Nov. 21, to take on the Tigers in Memphis.Â
