Tulane Posts Top-Five Finishes in Both Weekend Regattas
Oct 2, 2022 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Sailing stepped up the competition this weekend and responded on the water by earning top-five finishes in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1 and the Danmark Trophy Open Fleet Race on Sunday.
Â
"The ladies were solid all day long," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Our goal going into the weekend was to put together a consistent score line of top finishes, with a focus on minimizing mistakes. While we had a couple rough starts, we always sailed like smart veterans and pulled back points all day long. I would definitely say we achieved the primary goal."
Â
The Green Wave used a strong Sunday performance to climb from ninth up to fifth in the Danmark Open fleet Race. Skipper Cameron Giblin alongside crews Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez and Kit Stoll paced Tulane in the regatta landing third in the A Division. In the B Division, skippers Asher Zittrer and Peter Foley raced with crews Gillian Perrell, Riefkohl-Gonzalez, and Stoll for an 11th-place spot.
Â
Weather limited the Women's ACC Round 1B at Brown to only one day of racing on Saturday. Tulane ended in fourth place after skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan with crew Lydia Brown finished fourth in A Division and skipper Caroline Benson alongside crews Ellie Spearman and Abigail Borggaard landed third in the B Division.
Â
"This was our first major test of the season, and I'm very pleased with where we're starting from," Higgins said. "It will be a long season from here, but we're looking forward to it."
Â
Up next, Tulane will compete in the Open Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1 in Kings Point, New York, as well as the Stu Nelson Women's Fleet Race hosted by Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. Both regattas will be held Saturday and Sunday, October 8-9.
