NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane volleyball team fought hard and came out victorious in an intense four-set match against USF on Friday evening at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena inside Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave took the match 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25.
Tulane improved to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Bulls dipped to 6-9 and 0-3 in the league.
Amarachi Osuji led the Green Wave with 17 kills, followed by Mackenzie Martin with 9. Kate Van Houten played a key role in the offense dishing out 24 assists, while Martin paced Tulane with 21 digs.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle until the Green Wave pulled ahead late, going up 18-14. USF was able to pull within one at 23-24, but two straight kills from the Wave sealed the set one victory.
The Green Wave went down 4-1 in the second before going on a six-point run to go up 7-4. A 4-0 run late in the set gave Tulane the set win at 25-20.
USF erased a 14-9 deficit in the third set to thwart a Green Wave sweep en route to a four-point victory in that stanza.
The Green Wave fell behind in the beginning of the fourth set, but was able to take an 18-17 lead after running off six consecutive points. Having to play extra volleyball, Tulane was able to get its first AAC victory of the season with set four ending on back-to-back kills by Martin and Osuji.
Tulane is back in action Sunday in NOLA when 23rd-ranked UCF (12-1, 4-1) comes calling for a 1 p.m. start. The Knights suffered their first defeat Friday evening at the hands of Houston by a 3-1 score.
