Feb 18, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS- The Tulane University baseball team (1-0) defeated the University of Massachusetts Lowell (0-1) by a score of 10-2 on Friday night in Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane started the year on the right foot as it slugged its way to an 11th straight opening day victory.
The Green Wave got offensive contributions up and down the lineup as eight players collected at least one hit. The Wave hitters also showed patience in the box, drawing eight walks.
Freshman Brady Hebert impressed at the plate, collecting three hits, two RBIs, and scoring two runs in his debut. Redshirt sophomore Ethan Groff also had a nice day at the dish with a double and an RBI-single.
"I'm proud of him," head coach Travis Jewett said of Groff. "He's just that kid who keeps getting better. He can affect the game in so many ways."
Redshirt junior right-hander Tyler Hoffman took the mound for the Green Wave and tossed 4.1 innings, striking out three and allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks.
Freshman Chandler Welch made his debut on the mound in relief of Hoffman and went 3.2 hitless innings while striking out five and earning the first win of his career.
"I felt good," Welch said. "You obviously get that little extra-competitiveness and energy because it's opening day. Tonight was something I dreamed about as a kid."
The River Hawks got on the board in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but it was all Tulane after that.
With runners on first and third with one out, Jared Hart lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Groff, and tying the game at 1-1. Hebert then crushed a double to the left-center gap, scoring Minder from first and giving the Wave a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Red Hawks set the table with a runner on third with one out. Red Hawks catcher Ryan Proto sent a fly ball to deep right field which Groff caught and threw on a line to Bennett Lee, nabbing the sliding runner at the plate, and keeping Tulane's one-run lead intact.
"I was just trying to get behind the ball and let it eat," Groff said. "It's a one-run ballgame so you have to try and keep it close."
In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Chase Engelhard lined a double down the right field line, scoring Hebert from second and increasing the Wave lead to 3-1. Engelhard then scored on a single to left from Groff to give Tulane a 4-1 lead.
Hoffman was pulled from the game in the top of the fifth after giving up a run to make it 4-2. Freshman Chandler Welch took the mound with runners on first and third with one out. The righty struck out both batters he faced to escape the inning without further damage.
In the Bottom of the fifth, Tulane was poised to add to their lead with the bases loaded and one out. The Red Hawks pitcher then spiked a fastball in the dirt and Hebert scored from third on the wild pitch. Engelhard then lifted a sac-fly to center, scoring Lee and giving the Wave a 6-2 lead.
Tulane had runners at the corners and one out in the bottom of the sixth when Hebert singled to center for his third hit of the day, scoring Groff and extending the lead to 7-2. Designated hitter Luis Aviles then came to the plate with the bases juiced and blew the game wide open with a two-run single.
Freshman Jackson Linn lined an RBI single to center in the eighth to plate Tulane's 10th and final run of the night.
UP NEXT: Game two of the opening series starts at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in GFATS.
