Baseball Heads to Nicholls State for First Road Action of Season
Feb 21, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS-Â The Tulane University baseball team (3-0) is playing its first road game of the year on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. against Nicholls State (1-3)Â in Thibodaux, LA.Â
Â
The Green Wave is coming off an ideal opening weekend at GFATS, where they swept the University of Massachusetts Lowell, outscoring the River Hawks 27-7.Â
Â
Tulane's bats started the year hot, scoring in 14 of the 24 offensive innings of the opening series. Eight Green Wave hitters had three or more hits in the series as they recorded a .313 average as a group. Luis Aviles led the pack, going five-for-twelve with five RBIs on the weekend. Aviles' performance earned him a spot on the first AAC Honor Roll selection of the season.
Â
Tulane's probable starter is Carter Robinson, a 6'8" graduate student from Phoenix, Az. Robinson made his Tulane debut in the seventh inning on Saturday, retiring all three batters he faced. Robinson has been around the block in his collegiate career. He started out at Mesa Community College where he won NJCAA DII Pitcher of the Year in 2019. Robinson then moved on to ULL where he pitched in 2020-2021 and had a 3.05 ERA in 44.1 innings.
Â
Nicholls State finished 12th in the Southland Conference in 2021, and had a 21-34 overall record. The Colonels hosted the University of Missouri over the weekend for a four-game series. Nicholls dropped the first two games, won 9-8 on Sunday, and lost 7-4 on Monday.Â
Â
Tulane hasn't played Nicholls State since the 2019 season. The Wave played the Colonels twice and split the season series in 2019, with the road team winning the two matchups. The Green Wave won in Thibodaux 7-4 on 2/26/19. Tulane holds a 63-27 all-time series lead over the Colonels, with the first matchup coming in 1960.
