Tulane Baseball Dominates Southeastern 23-1
Mar 1, 2022 | Baseball
With the win, Tulane improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 against teams from the state of Louisiana.
"I'm happy for the kids for sure," head coach Travis Jewett said. "To go on the road last weekend and get a big series win at Louisiana Tech, you always kind of worry about the emotion of the team and how they are going to come out, but there was no let down tonight and I was proud of our team for that. I thought Carter (Robinson) got us off to a great start. We strung a bunch of good a bats together and we were able to get a big lead."
The Green Wave's 23-run explosion marked team's highest scoring output since Tulane plated 24 runs against Marist in 2005. Tulane surpassed 20 runs for just the fifth time in the last 10 years. Three of those 20-run performances have come under Jewett.
Offensively, Tulane collected 16 hits, drew 10 walks and smacked eight doubles. The Green Wave's eight doubles fell just one shy of tying the program record.
Reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Ethan Groff led the way offensively for the Green Wave, as he finished the night by going 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and three singles. His five hits, five runs scored, two doubles and four RBI were all career highs for the Orlando, Florida, native.
"I was just trying to be aggressive tonight and get after the fast ball," Groff said.
Redshirt junior Luis Aviles tied a career-high with three hits and two doubles. He also scored two runs.
Redshirt junior Jared Hart, who hit out of the No. 8 hole, collected a career-high five RBI. He also scored three runs.
"I really just wanted to keep things simple tonight," Hart said. "I just tried to see the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand as best as I could and when I got a good pitch to swing at, I drove the runners in."
Tulane's pitching staff was equally impressive, as it held Southeastern to just four hits, struck out seven, allowed just two walks and allowed just one earned run. Graduate student Carter Robinson got the start for the Green Wave and picked up the win after he worked 5.0 innings, gave up four hits and allowed just one earned run.
Teammates Chandler Welch, Turner Thompson, Cristian Sanchez and Teo Banks combined to work the final four innings and did not allow a hit.
The Green Wave never trailed in the game, as it opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning. After it was held scoreless in the second, Tulane then proceeded to outscore Southeastern 18-1 over the next three innings to open up a commanding 19-1 lead.
Tulane then added three runs in the seventh and one in the top of the ninth.
