Siegel Leads Tulane Baseball to Win in Opener of Villanova Series
Mar 18, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University baseball team (12-7) defeated Villanova University (3-11) in a 3-1 ballgame on Friday night inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.Â
Â
Grant Siegel was dominant over seven innings and Tulane hitters struck out only six times in the Wave's second win in three days.Â
Â
"We need to keep believing and maintain our mindset," head coach Travis Jewett said. "Last weekend didn't feel good, but the kids kept coming and we just need to stay positive."
Â
Siegel, a freshman, took the hill for his first weekend start and second start of the season. Siegel allowed just one unearned run on six hits while striking out seven Wildcats. Siegel threw 102 pitches in his start and lowered his ERA to 0.39.
Â
"He was the story of the game,"Â Â Jewett said. "I don't think we could have scripted his outing any better.
Â
"I never lose confidence," Siegel said. "I know what I can do, I know what my defense can do. My only goal is to go out there and execute the game plan and help the team win."
Â
Senior Cole Patten started for the Wildcats and allowed three earned runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings.Â
Â
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead.
Â
Ethan Groff led off and slapped the first pitch he saw back up the middle for a base hit. Groff had another knock later in the game, raising his average over the .400 mark, right around where he has been all season. Groff has eight multi-hit games this season.
Â
Tulane tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Brady Marget ripped a double down the right field line, advanced to third in a wild pitch, and scored on another errant fastball.Â
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, the Wave set the table. Jackson Linn got on with an infield single and Brayden Morrow doubled to left to put runners on first-and-third with no outs. Jared Hart came to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly into deep left field, scoring Linn and giving the Wave a 2-1 lead. Trevor Minder kept the rally going by lining a double down the left field line, scoring Morrow, and extending the lead to 3-1.
Â
Lane Thomas relieved Siegel and pitched a clean eighth, before Zach DeVito came in to finish off the Wildcats. The right-hander allowed a leadoff walk but got a soft ground ball and two strikeouts to slam the door.Â
Â
UP NEXT:Â Game two starts tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. inside GFATS.
