Tulane Baseball Rolls in Dayton Series Opener
Mar 25, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University baseball team (15-7-1) defeated the University of Dayton (8-10) by a score of 12-1 on Friday night inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave went up 7-0 in the second inning and didn't look back in the dominant win.
"Offensively I thought we came out on point," head coach Travis Jewett said. "When you can get up 7-0 before you get your third at-bat you feel good about having a little bit of wiggle room."
Freshman Grant Siegel took the hill for the Green Wave and allowed just one run over six solid innings while striking out five. The right-hander came into the game with a 0.39 ERA, sixth lowest in the nation.
"It was a battle throughout the game," Siegel said. "It was a dogfight for me the whole night, but my only goal was to put the team in the best situation to win."
Junior Ryan Steinhauer started for Dayton and allowed five earned runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. The lefty touted a 2.21 ERA coming into the start.
The Flyers threatened early when it put runners on first and second with one out. Dayton then tried a double steal, but Bennett Lee popped out of the squat and fired a strike to Brayden Morrow, snagging the runner at third for the second out of the inning. Grant Siegel got the next hitter to fly out to right to get out of the inning.
Sophomore Chase Engelhard got the Wave going in the bottom of the first when he launched a 105-mph missile over the wall in left for a two-run home run, his second of the year.
In the bottom of the second, the Wave extended its lead to 7-0. Luis Aviles collected a two-RBI single on a sharp line drive to left field. Simon Baumgardt came up with the bases loaded and two outs and put together an incredible 10-pitch at-bat that concluded with a bases clearing double down the right field line. Baumgardt now has three straight games with two hits.
"I feel pretty good, especially with two strikes right now," Baumgardt said. "It was a great feeling to see that (double) land in fair territory."
Dayton got on the board in the top of the fourth with a run to cut the lead to 7-1.
Aviles led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple into the right-center field gap, his second triple in the past two games. Freshman Jackson Linn came up next and lifted a fly ball to center, scoring Aviles and pushing the lead back to seven runs at 8-1. Jared Hart added a two-run single in the inning and Trevor Minder later scored on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 11-1.
Jackson Linn legged out an infield single in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Turner Thompson came in to relieve Siegel in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings. Aviles got an RBI-walk in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 12-1 lead, the final score of the night.
UP NEXT: Game two of the series is at 2:00 p.m. inside GFATS.
