Green Wave Claims Dayton Series on Baumgardt Walk-Off
Mar 27, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University baseball team (16-8-1) took the series from the University of Dayton (9-11) with a 3-2 walk-off win on Sunday afternoon inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane were poised to cruise to a 2-0 win, but the Flyers tied the game in the top of the ninth. The Green Wave were unfazed and immediately answered in the bottom of the ninth to take the game and the series.
"It says a lot," head coach Travis Jewett said about the team's resilience. "We just need to clean some stuff up and get going offensively a little bit and we will be fine."
In the bottom of the ninth, Bennett Lee walked, and Jacob LaPrairie singled the Tulane catcher to third before Simon Baumgardt lined a ball down the right field line to send the Wave home a winner.
"That one felt good," Baumgardt said. "We knew we needed to win that one and I think everybody played good enough to win today."
Michael Massey had one of the most dominant starts of the year by a Tulane pitcher to help propel the Wave to victory. Massey, a freshman, got his fifth start for the Wave and pitched a 7.2 innings gem. Massey struck out six and allowed just three hits. The outing was the longest by any Tulane pitcher this season.
"I was putting my fastball where I wanted it and my other stuff was working too," Massey said. "My change-up was there when I needed it and my slider was there when I needed it. I always felt like we were going to win this game and I'm ecstatic."
Junior lefty Mark Manfredi got the start for the Flyers and allowed two runs, one earned, over six innings of work.
Tulane struck first in the bottom of the first when freshman Jackson Linn scored on a wild pitch from Manfredi to take a 1-0 lead.
The Green Wave extended its lead to 2-0 when Chase Engelhard scored on a Trevor Minder sacrifice fly.
Massey exited the game in the eighth with runners on first and second with two outs. Tyler Hoffman entered the game and struck out the only hitter he faced to maintain the 2-0 lead.
"The way it was going for both teams offensively, it was going to be a pitchers' duel and (Massey) was huge," Jewett said.
Dayton's Marcos Pujols and Alex Neff each hit solo home runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game before Baumgardt's walk-off in the bottom of the frame.
