Tulane Baseball Cruises as Aviles Goes Deep Twice

BATON ROUGE – The Tulane University baseball team (20-9-1) defeated Southern University (9-19) by a score of 19-5 in seven innings on Wednesday night inside Lee-Hines Stadium.
Every Tulane hitter had reached base by the top of the fourth inning and Tulane's three arms silenced the Jaguars' bats in the Green Wave's fourth straight win.
Freshman Chandler Welch got the start for Tulane and matched his career high in innings pitched with five solid frames. The right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out three. It was the second start of Welch's career, the other coming in another midweek clash with Nicholls.
The two hitters at the top of Tulane's lineup both had monster, and near identical, days at the plate. Ethan Groff and Luis Aviles both had three hits, four RBIs, and walked once. Groff scored five runs and hit one home run and Aviles scored three times and sent two balls out of the ballpark.
The Green Wave scored early and often, starting with two runs in the top of the first that didn't require a single hit from Tulane.
Tulane put up a crooked eight runs in the top of the second, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Groff and Aviles on consecutive pitches. Groff now has home runs in consecutive games for the second time this season and Aviles' hitting streak has reached eight games. Jared Hart also had a two-RBI triple in the frame.
Aviles launched his second home run of the game in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 19-1. The Green Wave then allowed four runs before the game was called in the seventh with Tulane up 19-5.
UP NEXT: Tulane hosts USF for the first conference series inside GFATS of the season. First pitch of Friday's opener is at 6:30 p.m.
