
Tulane Baseball Tops USF in Series Opener

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University baseball team (21-9-1) defeated the University of South Florida (18-12) by a score of 8-5 on Friday night inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave went up 4-0 in the first inning and didn't look back holding the lead until the game went final.
Freshman Grant Siegel took the hill for the Green Wave and allowed four runs over six solid innings while striking out eight. The right-hander came into the game with a 1.000 ERA, the ninth-lowest in the nation.
Right-hander Orion Kerkering started for the Bulls and allowed five earned runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. The lefty touted a 2.21 ERA coming into the start.
The Bulls threatened to score early putting runners on first and second with one out. USF tried a double steal, but Bennett Lee popped out of the squat and fired a strike to Brayden Morrow, snagging the runner at third for the second out of the inning. Siegel got the next hitter to fly out to right to Ethan Groff to get out of the inning.
Redshirt senior Luis Aviles got the Wave going in the bottom of the first when he launched a missile down the right-field line. Freshman Brady Marget got hit to put runners on first and second. Freshman Jackson Linn placed a ball in the furthest part of right field to drive in Aviles for the first run of the game. Trevor Minder and Jared Hart would follow to collect the third and fourth RBI.
USF would answer in the following frame with a two-run homer off the bat of Bordil cutting Tulane's lead to two. The Bull's would go on to tie it up at four all in the top of the third off back-to-back sacrifice flys.
In the bottom of the third, the Wave extended its lead to 6-4. Hart collected an RBI double on a sharp line drive to right field. Brady Hebert came up with the one out and one man on to provide the sacrifice fly that would score the sixth run of the game.
The next four innings were silent, it wasn't until the eighth when the Bulls cut the advantage to one run with a lead-off solo home run.
Hart led off the bottom of the eighth with a swinging strike out however, he reached on a wild pitch and eventually made his way to second on a throwing error from the catcher. Hebert singled to left to put two men on. Groff, who had been without a hit, dropped a ball in shallow right field to score Hart. Aviles flied one out to centerfield scoring Hebert on the sacrifice.
Zach DeVito who came in to pitch in the eighth would get the final nod. Giving up a leadoff hit before getting the final three outs to close out the game.
