
Volleyball Drops First AAC Match in Epic Five - Set Battle

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane Volleyball (5-7, 0-1 AAC) dropped a five-set nail bitter to Houston (10-2, 1-0 AAC) to open up American Athletic Conference play inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena Inside the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tulane put up a fair fight but couldn't pull through the tough Cougar defense.
The offense was led by middle blocker Kayla Kaiser. The graduate student had 17 kills, 18 points and hit .484. Senior Melissa Kolurbasi didn't deviate from her standard collecting 15 kills, 18 points and hit a modest .263.
Senior setter Kate Van Houten assisted in 44 kills and picked up 11 digs to complete her fourth double-double of the season.
Jillian Dits got the start at the Libero position. The senior claimed 23 digs off of Cougar hits.
Tulane took set one 25-22 with 15 kills and hit .225. Tulane started strong putting up four unanswered on the board. The Green Wave would stay in the driver's seat opening up the gap 21-11. The cougars rattled off seven straights to put them right back in the set 17-21. Tulane would ultimately come out on top 25-22.
The Wave dropped set two by way of 9-25.
Set three went to the Olive and Blue who outscored Houston 26-24. The set was within inches until the Green Wave scored four straight with two kills and two blocks to end the match.
Set four was taken by the Cougars by score of 25-18. Tulane trailed the entire set following a 11-11 knot up, despite their best efforts to keep it close the dropped the set and headed for a fifth.
The Wave started slow in the fifth and spent the rest of the set trying to crawl out. The set went final 15-8 in favor of the opponents.
The Green Wave posted 52 kills, 48 assists, four aces, 377 digs, 6 blocks and hit .190 as a team.
The Wave will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena Inside the Devlin Fieldhouse to take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati (2-9, 0-0 AAC).
