
The Green Wave Falls to Wichita State

NEW ORLEANS- Tulane (4-16)ย ย volleyball dropped their second match against western division conference rivals, Wichita State (13-5)ย on Saturday, 3-0.ย
The Green Wave was led offensively, yet again, by outside hitter Avery Burks. The freshman finished the match with 14 kills and a .448 hitting percentage. Ilayda Demirtas followed closely behind with 13 kills. Lauryn Burrows led the team in digs finishing with 19.ย ย
In the first set, the Green Wave struck first off of a Sabrina Skyers kill. However, the Shockers were quick to answer, scoring five unanswered points.Tulane came back within four at 11-7 after scoring three unanswered points, but the Shockers kept their lead and led by four or more points until a late set rally by the Green Wave. Tulane went from a seven-point deficit at 22-17 to a one-point match at 23-22. With Annabelle He at the service line, the Green Wave was able to tie the match 23-23. Wichita State struck first and Tulane had an answer until the score was 25-25. The Shockers hit back-to-pack points and claimed the first set, 27-25.ย
The Green Wave went up to a quick 2-0 score off of a Skyers kill and a Savannah Perry ace. Wichita State was quick to answer and tied the score right back. Tulane and the Shockers continued this pattern until the score was 4-4. Wichita State scored five points back-to-back to claim the largest lead of the match thus far and force a Green Wave timeout. After the timeout and an overturned call for Tulane. The Green Wave regained momentum and came back within one at 10-9. Tulane trailed by two or less until they were able to score four unanswered points and force another Tulane timeout at 18-12. Despite a few good plays from the Green Wave, they were unable to rally and trailed for the remainder of the set. Wichita State claimed the second set, 25-18.
Tulane claimed the first point of the third set, yet again. However, the Shockers were quick to answer, scoring five back-to-back points to force a Tulane timeout. The Green Wave was unable to break the point drought after the timeout. Wichita State scored another four unanswered points until a kill from Ilayda Demirtas gave the Green Wave another point. The Shockers kept on their run and continued to lead Tulane at 12-2. Avery Burks picked up back-to-back kills to get the Green Wave back on the board. Wichita State's lead was too much for Tulaneย to take back. The Green Wave trailed by 9 or more for the remainder of the set and were defeated, 25-9.ย
Tulane will be back on the road next Friday when they travel to UTSA to take on the Roadrunners in another western division matchup.ย
