
Tulane is Bested By UTSA Despite a Late Comeback Attempt

SAN ANTONIO, TX- The Green Wave volleyball team (4-17) fell to UTSA (11-11), 3-1.Â

Tulane was led offensively by freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks. Burks finished the match with 10 kills. Following closely behind was sophomore right side hitter, Katherine Crosley. The Austin, TX native finished the match with nine kills and a .471 hitting percentage.Â

The Green Wave's defensive front was led by redshirt-sophomore, Ilayda Demirtas and sophomore Mackenzie Mahr. Demirtas finished the match with four assisted blocks and Mahr finished the match with three assisted blocks and one solo block.Â

Graduate libero, Lauryn Burrows, finished the match with 20 digs and three aces, good for a team high in both categories.Â

The Green Wave started the first set with two back-to-back points. However, the Roadrunners kept their composure and took the lead. Tulane tied the score, 5-5, but UTSA reclaimed a quick lead and led for the remainder of the set. The Roadrunners took the first set, 25-20.

The second set was dominated early by UTSA. After going up to a quick 7-0 lead, the deficit was too much for Tulane chip away at. For the remainder of the set, the Roadrunners led by five or more points and claimed the set, 25-14.

The third set showcased a completely different Tulane team. The set started off with a service ace from setter, Laura Fiabane, and the Green Wave continued rolling from there. UTSA came within striking distance at 10-8, but four unanswered points from the Green Wave solidified the lead. Tulane led for the entirety of the set and forced a fourth set, 25-15.

The Green Wave carried their dominance from the third set over to the beginning of the fourth. With Burrows at the service line, Tulane scored a quick five points. With help from a rowdy UTSA crowd, the Roadrunners remained unphased and answered back, coming within one at 5-4. Tulane kept their lead by two or more until UTSA came back to tie the score at 18-18. The Roadrunners took the lead and ran with it. UTSA claimed the set and the match, 25-19.

The Green Wave will be back at home next Friday when they take on American Athletic Conference newcomer, UNC Charlotte at 6:00 PM.
