
SMU Defeats Tulane

NEW ORLEANS- Tulane volleyball (6-22) fell 3-0 to SMU (21-6), 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.Â
The Green Wave's offensive effort was led by freshman outside hitter Avery Burks. Burks finished the match with eight kills. Burks also led the team in digs finishing with 11.
Tulane's defensive front finished the match with seven blocks. Three different Green Wave blockers had three assisted blocks that led the defense.Â
Tulane had five different service aces in the match. Libero Lauryn Burrows tied her career high in aces finishing with three of the five.Â
SMU went up to a quick 7-3 lead at the beginning of the first set. The Green Wave was able to come back within one at 8-7 and remained nipping at the Mustang's heels for the majority of the set. Tulane went on a 4-0 scoring run and was able to tie the match for the first time since 1-1, at 15-15. After five more tie scores at 25-25, SMU was able to secure the last two points of the match and take the first set, 27-25.
The Green Wave scored the first three points of the second set. However, SMU was able to come back and tie the score at 4-4. After more back-and-forth action, the Mustangs went on a 5-0 scoring run to stretch the lead. For the remainder of the set, Tulane was unable to get their feet back under them. SMU took the second set, 25-10.Â
The third set began as another back-and-fourth battle until the score was 9-9. SMU scored two back-to-back to take the lead. The Green Wave was unable to snatch back the momentum and SMU led by two or more points for the remainder of the set. Tulane lost the set and the match, 25-19.Â
The Green Wave will hit the road on Friday evening to take on Tulsa in their last road matches of the season.
