FINAL STATS
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane baseball team suffered its sixth loss of the 2023 campaign Saturday night, as it dropped a 7-3 decision to St. John's inside Greer Field in Turchin Stadium.
The Red Storm improved to 3-2 overall. The Green Wave has yet to find the win column this season.
Left fielder Paul Orbon had a game-high three hits for the visitors, while center fielder David Glancy and shortstop Jace Jeremiah drove in two runs apiece. Right fielder Jackson Tucker also scored twice.
The Green Wave's big offensive contribution came off the bat of its cleanup hitter, left fielder Jackson Linn. The Boston, Massachusetts native belted a three-run, fourth-inning bomb over the wall in right center for the game's only round-tripper. Catcher Brennan Lambert and first baseman Brady Marget also had two hits.
SJU reliever Tommy Finnegan (1-0) went an inning and a third and allowed two hits but no runs. Nick Cirelli hurled the game's final three scoreless innings, recording three strikeouts against a hit and two walks to get his first save. Joe Mascio, who started the game on the mound for the Red Storm, fanned 10 Tulane batters in four and two-thirds innings.
Green Wave starter Cristian Sanchez (0-2) went into the sixth inning, allowing four runs (all earned), five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Tulane also got a nice mound performance at the end as Billy Price held SJU off the scoreboard in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames, with just two hits and four strikeouts.
Linn's homer broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, but the visitors countered with a six-spot in the sixth and tacked on one more in the seventh for the game's final margin.
The two teams will close the series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
