Tulane Opens AAC Baseball Tournament against Cougars

CLEARWATER, FL – The seventh-seeded Tulane baseball team will face second-seeded Houston Tuesday on Day 1 of the 2023 American Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Clearwater. Double elimination will be the format in use for this week's championship.

The game will be played at BayCare Ballpark and will start at 4 p.m. ET/3 CT.

The Green Wave comes in at 15-39 overall after posting an 8-16 record in league play. The Cougars went 33-21 and 17-6 in conference action.

Tuesday's winner will play Thursday (47 minutes after the completion of Game 7) in Game 8 against the winner of No. 3 Wichita State and No. 6 Memphis. The loser will have to turn around and play Wednesday in Game 6 against the Wichita-Memphis loser (47 minutes after the completion of Game 5).

The two teams met in New Orleans two weekends ago with Houston gaining the sweep.

BANKS, CASTRO HONORED
Tulane saw two of its players recognized when the league office announced its postseason honors on Monday. Outfielder Teo Banks and pitcher Ricky Castro were both named to the conference's second team.Â

Banks was tops in the AAC (league games only) with 72 total bases, was tied for first in home runs (11), second in runs scored (28), third in RBI (28) and eighth in batting average (.340).Â

Castro was sixth in the AAC (all games) with a 4.54 earned run average and was fourth with 75.1 innings pitched. On the season, he struck out 76 and walked just 20, allowing a .264 batting average against.

The Memphis baseball team put forth another dominant effort in a 12-2, seven-inning win over visiting Tulane Saturday afternoon at FedExPark.

Memphis starter JT Durham (4-3) was superb, striking out seven over six innings in an outing that saw him give up two runs on four hits with one walk.

Tulane starter Collin Reilly (0-1) got the loss, as he was one of six Green Wave pitchers to toe the rubber. The Sea Girt, N.J. native issued seven of the team's 15 walks.Â

Tigers' first baseman Shane Cox went 3-for-3 with a double, homer and five RBI and catcher Brennan Dubose knocked in two more runs. Third baseman Austin Baskin scored twice.

The Olive and Blue's offense came on a solo home run by third baseman Simon Baumgardt and a sacrifice fly to left by second baseman James Agabedis.

Baumgardt's homer was his 13th of the season. Left fielder Brady Hebert and right fielder Jake LaPrairie each posted their 12th and eighth stolen bases, respectively.

The Green Wave will now turn its attention to next week's conference tournament in Clearwater, Florida. Tulane will be the seven seed and will face Houston, the bracket's second seed, Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET/3 CT. Those two teams just met in New Orleans last weekend with the Cougars earning a sweep.
