
Temple Defeats the Green Wave in Five Sets

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Temple's volleyball team bested Tulane in a five-set match (25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 9-15) Friday evening in McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia.
The Owls improved to 11-4 and 2-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Green Wave dropped to 4-12 and 0-4 in the league.
Ilayda Demirtas led the Green Wave in kills, finishing the match with 10. There were three different players who posted nine kills, including sophomore middle blocker, Sabrina Skyers who bested her career high. Another middle who recorded a career-high was freshman Jordan White. She had seven kills in the match.
White also led the Green Wave on the defensive front with two solo blocks and three assisted blocks. Graduate libero Lauryn Burrows also had 21 digs.
Set one started off in a back-and-forth battle. The Green Wave struck first off of an Avery Burks kill but Temple had answers until it was tied, 5-5. Tulane proceeded to score four unanswered points and led for the remainder of the set. The Green Wave claimed the set in a dominant fashion, 25-17.
The second set brought a lot more back-and-forth play than the first. Temple struck first and ran the score up to 7-5. Tulane was able to answer and tie the set at 11-11. The Owls proceeded to score four unanswered points and claimed the momentum of the set. Temple defeated the Green Wave, 25-17.
In set three, Tulane started off by leading Temple at 8-4. Temple was able to come back and tie the set, 10-10. The Owls were able to strike next and lead the set for the first time since 1-0. They kept the momentum and led for the remainder of the set. Despite a late-set comeback attempt from the Green Wave, Temple claimed set three, 25-19.
In the fourth set, Tulane started off leading Temple 7-4. After going on a run, the Owls were able to come back and tie the Green Wave at 10-10. They proceeded to take the lead at 17-14 but the Tulane was not yet ready for the match to be over. Tulane went on a 3-0 run and tied the score. After much back-and-forth, the Green Wave and the Owls were tied once again at 19-19. Tulane was able to score six straight points and claim the set, 25-19.
The fifth set was dominated by Temple early. After a Temple service error making the score 1-1, the Owls went on a 6-0 run. The Green Wave remained on their tail, coming within two at 10-8 but Temple was able to carry its momentum up Broad Street and claim the set, 15-9.
The Green Wave will be back on the road next Friday when it takes on East Carolina in another American Athletic Conference match.
