SUNRISE, Fla. – Despite a career performance from junior Kaleb Banks Tulane men's basketball (5-7) was unable to overcome a 24-4 first half scoring run by Florida State (8-3) eventually falling to the Seminoles 64-77 on Saturday. Banks notched career highs in points and rebounds to lead the Green Wave against Florida State in the AutoNation Orange Bowl Basketball Classic in Amerant Bank Arena.
With the defeat, the Wave dropped to 0-5 away from home this season including 0-3 in neutral site contests. Tulane also fell to 12-27 all-time against the Seminoles.
Banks had a game to remember even in defeat for the Green Wave as he led all scorers with a career-high 33 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field. The Hampton, Georgia, native also pulled down a game-high and career best 16 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season.
The performance for Banks marked the first time a player for Tulane has scored at least 30 points since Kevin Cross tallied 31 in the regular season finale against Wichita State on March 8, 2024. The 16 rebounds by the junior also marked the first time a player has recorded at least 15 since Cross pulled down 15 against Cincinnati on February 7, 2023.
Joining Banks in double figures for the Wave was Rowan Brumbaugh with 15 points to go with a pair of assists.
Jamir Watkins led four players with double-digit points for Florida State. Watkins finished with 29 points along with a team-high five assists. He scored 19 of his 29 points from the free throw stripe as he shot 19-of-23 from the line.
Tulane got off to a solid start in the first half as Banks and Brumbaugh each knocked down a three in the opening minutes to put the Wave up 6-0. The Seminole responded in a big way mounting 24-4 run to put Tulane behind 10-24 with 8:34 to go in the half. The deficit reached as many as 17 points before the Green Wave hit the break down 22-37.
The Green Wave did not back down in the second half despite the Seminoles extending their advantage to as many as 19 points. Banks led the fight for Tulane in the second half as he tallied 20 of his 33 points after the break. The Wave continued to battle to pull within 10 points in the final minutes of the game but could not get any closer ultimately falling 64-77.
