NEW ORLEANS – Tulane Baseball, which captured its season-opening series with Northwestern last weekend, is back in action Tuesday evening when the Nicholls Colonels come to Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. tilt.
Â
The Green Wave enters the game at 2-1, while Nicholls is unbeaten at 3-0 following a home sweep of Sacred Heart last weekend.
Â
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jack Benjamin and Ron Swoboda on the call. Voice of the Green Wave Corey Gloor will handle the radio duties for the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 FM WRBH for a broadcast that can also be heard on the Tulane Athletics and Varsity Network apps. Airtime for the game is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Â
League Honors
Tulane junior pitcher Chandler Welch was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday following a spectacular showing by the Slidell native on Saturday.
Â
Welch was dominant in the 6-2 win over Northwestern as he registered a career-high 10 strikeouts to lift the Green Wave to its first victory of the season. He allowed just one hit and a hit batter in the five-inning, 78-pitch effort.
Â
Also earning recognition was second baseman Connor Rasmussen for the AAC Honor Roll. The Fort Mill, S.C. native hit .444 this week (4-for-9) with three runs scored and seven RBI. He also posted an on-base percentage of .571 and a slugging percentage of .889 with eight assists and no errors. Unquestionably, his biggest moment of the weekend came in Sunday's rubber match with the Wildcats when he blasted a grand slam over the wall in right center to clinch the series victory.
Â
The Opposition
Nicholls first baseman Edgar Alvarez picked up an award of his own, netting the Southland Conference Player of the Week honor after hitting .545 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI and nine runs last weekend.Â
Â
The Colonels scored 40 runs against Sacred Heart and secured their first season opening sweep since 2016.
