DeBarge, Ragin’ Cajuns Walk Off Comeback Win over Wave
Mar 10, 2024 | Baseball
LAFAYETTE – UL-Lafayette shortstop Kyle DeBarge smashed a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift the host Ragin' Cajuns past visiting Tulane 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Russo Park.
Â
The victory gave the home team the series victory and moved it back above .500 at 8-7. The Green Wave fell to 10-6.
Â
The shot made a winner of Cajuns reliever Blake McGehee (1-0), who held Tulane scoreless for four innings, allowing a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.
Â
The Wave's Jacob Moore (1-1), who gave up DeBarge's homer, suffered his first loss. All three of those runs were charged to him, along with the two hits. He had two strikeouts, the latter of which would've ended the game, but the third strike to UL-Lafayette pinch-hitter Luke Yuhasz was low and skidded between the legs of Tulane catcher Colin Tuft. That allowed Yuhasz to safely reach first after his swing and miss.
Â
First baseman Trey LaFleur then singled through the left side, setting the stage for the DeBarge blast.
Â
Both DeBarge and LaFleur had three hits, the latter posting his third double of the season.
Â
Tulane was limited to just four hits and right fielder Brock Slaton had two of those, including his third double as well.
Â
The Green Wave built its lead with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Designated hitter Nathan Rose came home with the first on a Cajun error in the second, while shortstop Gavin Schulz put the second on the board with an RBI groundout in the fourth. The final tally came on first baseman Brady Marget's second homer of the season to right center.
Â
There were six hit batters in the game, four by the UL-Lafayette pitching staff.
Â
Tulane's pitching trio of starter Will Clements and relievers Carter Benbrook and Henry Shuffler kept the home team off balance all day. The group scattered seven hits over seven and two-thirds innings with one run on two walks to go with five strikeouts.
