Green Wave Outlasts Waves, Weather in Series Opener
Mar 15, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane and visiting Pepperdine navigated nearly three hours of weather delays before the Green Wave emerged with a 3-2 win over the Waves Friday on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Olive and Blue snapped a three-game skid and improved to 11-7 overall. Pepperdine dipped to 4-14 in defeat.
Â
For Tulane, Henry Shuffler (3-0) got the win, allowing just a hit in two innings of relief work. He gave way to Jacob Moore, who picked up his second save after getting the team's last five outs. He struck out three and walked one.
Â
Pepperdine reliever Dylan Stewart (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Â
Tulane catcher Colin Tuft and third baseman Gavin Schulz each had 2-for-4 days at the plate with the latter blasting his fifth homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1.
Â
First baseman Brady Marget hammered his third homer of 2024 in the seventh frame with a solo shot that glanced just off the glove of Pepperdine's Connor Bradshaw and over the right field wall.
Â
Pepperdine shortstop Julian Nunez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the visitors.
Â
Lightning brought the game to a halt for two hours, 17 minutes in the top of the sixth inning and rain did the same for 31 minutes in the top of the eighth.
Â
Moore made the biggest pitch of the game when he coaxed an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded just after the second delay ended. The play preserved the Green Wave's narrow one-run advantage.
Â
The two teams will play a doubleheader at 11 a.m. to complete the series on Saturday to avoid a gloomy forecast for Sunday.
Â
Saturday's game ticket will be used for both games and ticket holders will be allowed one re-entry, if they choose to leave. Season ticket holders can bank/exchange their tickets for the originally scheduled Sunday game. Sunday single-game ticket holders can contact the Tulane Ticket Office at 504-861-9283 or gowavego@tulane.edu for a refund or exchange.
Â
Tomorrow's second game (third of the series) will start approximately 45 minutes following the conclusion the day's first game.Â
Â
On the promotional front, Saturday's 11 a.m. game will be the Green Wave's Dumb and Dumber-themed game, while St. Patrick's Day will be celebrated during the second contest. One hundred (100) giant cowboy hats and 500 St. Patrick's Day-themed t-shirts will be given away when gates open at 10 a.m.
