Apr 5, 2024 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, AL – UAB starter Blayze Berry limited visiting Tulane to just two runs over seven innings and left fielder Brayton Brown drove in five runs to help the Blazers secure a 6-2 win in the first game of the series between the two schools on Friday at Young Memorial Park.
The win allowed the home team to improve to 13-16 and 2-5 in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave fell to 16-14 and 2-5 in the league as well.
The visitors got to Berry (2-1) for single runs in the first two innings (solo homer by first baseman Brady Marget and a sac fly by center fielder Teo Banks), but the right-hander limited TU to just three hits over the next five innings. He finished with five strikeouts and just one walk. Relievers Christian Clack and Brock Hill hurled clean eighth and ninth innings to nail down the victory.
Tulane starter Luc Fladda (0-2) took the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits in four and one-third innings with two strikeouts and one walk.
Brown went 3-for-5 on the evening and wound up a triple shy of the cycle. He boasted a two-run double in the third, an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run homer to left center in the seventh.
Catcher Nick Hollifield added three hits and second baseman Logan Braunschweig scored twice.
Tulane catcher Colin Tuft posted an infield single in the fifth to run his on-base stretch to 22 consecutive games and his hitting streak to 14.
The second game of the series will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.
