Green Wave Surges Past FAU, 80-65
Jan 15, 2025 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – A 21-2 scoring run late in the second half vaulted Tulane men's basketball (10-8, 4-1) over Florida Atlantic (9-9, 2-3) for an 80-65 victory on Wednesday night inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave shot 56.0 percent from the field and forced the Owls into seven turnovers in the second half to hold for its fifth consecutive home win.
With the victory, Tulane improved to 9-2 this season in Uptown including 3-0 in American Athletic Conference play. The Wave also moved to 6-2 all-time against FAU with a 4-1 mark against the Owls in New Orleans.
Kaleb Banks and Rowan Brumbaugh combined for 45 points to lead the offensive attach for the Green Wave. Banks finished the night with 25 points, including 21 in the second half, on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. Brumbaugh tallied 20 points with three made three-pointers and a strong effort from the charity stripe where he went 9-for-11.
The 20-point performance for Banks was his eighth of the season and his third in league play. Meanwhile, Brumbaugh reached 20 points for the fourth time this year and the second time since AAC competition began.
The only other player in double figures for Tulane was Asher Woods with 16 points to go with five rebounds and two steals. Woods has scored double-digits in each of the last three games and four of the Wave's five conference games this season.
Despite not reaching double-digits, Gregg Glenn III stuffed the stat sheet again as he ended his day with seven points, eight rebounds, and a career-high 11 assists. Since conference play began, Glenn III has led Tulane in assists dishing out at least four in each game including his first performance with double figure dimes tonight against FAU.
After the Owls claimed the initial advantage, Tulane responded with a 10-2 scoring run to claim its first lead of the night 10-9 with 14:26 on the clock. The Wave continued to step up the intensity defensively as it held FAU to just four points over the next nine-plus minutes to build an 11-point advantage.
Brumbaugh led the charge offensively for Tulane in the first half scoring 13 points before the break. After FAU back pulled with six in the last minute of the half, the redshirt sophomore converted a layup for the final bucket to give the Green Wave a 31-23 advantage heading into the locker room.
The second half opened with the Wave and the Owls trading baskets until FAU made a 10-2 to take its first lead since the 11:47 mark of the first half. The deficit did not last long for Tulane as back-to-back three-pointers by Woods sparked a 21-2 run that put the Green Wave back in front 69-53 with 3:28 remaining.
Banks and Brumbaugh combined to close out the win for Tulane scoring eight of the team's final 11 in the closing minutes. The Green Wave ultimately held on to win 80-65 over FAU and improve to 4-1 in conference play this season.
Up next, Tulane will travel to Philadelphia to square off against Temple on Sunday, January 19. The game between the Green Wave and the Owls is scheduled to tipoff at 12 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
