Tulane Controls the Paint in 82-71 Road Win Over Rice

HOUSTON – A dominant performance in the paint powered Tulane men's basketball (11-9, 5-2) back into the win column with an 82-71 road victory over Rice (11-9, 2-5) on Saturday. The Green Wave outscored the Owls 46-14 around the rim including 22-4 in the second half.
With the win, Tulane improves to 2-4 in true road contests this season including 2-2 in American Athletic Conference play. The Wave also moved to 29-24 all-time against Rice including five consecutive victories over the Owls.
Offensively, the Green Wave got contributions from every player that touched the floor. Six players led the way for the Wave in double figures as Gregg Glenn III paced the team with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The junior forward also added six rebounds, three assists, and one block against the Owls.
Next up on the stat sheet was Asher Woods with 13 points followed Rowan Brumbaugh with 12. Kaleb Banks and Kam Williams each added 11 points and six boards. Williams made his presence felt defensively as well with three blocks and a pair of steals. Mari Jordan rounded out the top scorers for Tulane finishing with 10 points off the bench including eight in the second half.
As a team, the Wave connected at a 51.8 percent clip from the field with most of its damage coming in the paint. The 46 points in paint tallied by Tulane matched a season-high when the Green Wave recorded 46 points in the paint in the win over UTSA on January 4.
Defensively, Tulane held Rice to just 28.1 percent shooting from the field and 25.6 percent from downtown. The Wave took its defense to another level in the second half as the Owls only made six shots from the field in the final 20 minutes of play.
The contest was a back-and-forth battle over the opening six minutes of the first half. The Green Wave made its first push with an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the opening frame at 18-9 with 9:35 on the clock.
Tulane continued to maintain its advantage over the Owls over the next few minutes, but Rice made the final push of the first half. The Owls finished with a 7-4 scoring run to put the Wave down 36-37 at the break.
The Green Wave quickly reclaimed the advantage in the opening minutes of the second half. Banks knocked down his lone triple of the game to put Tulane in front and spark an 11-1 run that gave the Wave a 47-39 lead.
Rice made a brief push to pull back within three points with just over 10 minutes remaining, but Tulane mounted another response to extend its lead back to double digits. The largest lead of the contest for the Green Wave came with 3:49 to play at 68-54 in favor of Tulane.
In the final minutes of the game, Tulane made its free throws to stop any attempt at a late comeback by the Owls. The Green Wave ended the day with the final four points of the game to secure the 82-71 road victory over Rice.
Up next, Tulane will return home to host No. 24 Memphis on Thursday, January 30. The game between the Green Wave and the Tigers is scheduled to tipoff at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
