Big First Half Fuels Emphatic Road Win for Wave
Jan 4, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, NC – The Tulane trio of Victoria Keenan, Sherese Pittman and Amira Mabry combined for 56 points as the Green Wave drubbed host Charlotte 79-58 Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena.
The Olive and Blue improved to 9-5 and 2-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while Charlotte dipped to 5-9 and 0-3 in the league.
Keenan had 20 points and nine rebounds, connecting on six of her nine 3-point attempts, while Pittman and Mabry each posted 18 apiece with a combined 16 rebounds (Mabry finished one carom short of a double-double).
Kyren Whittington also chipped in seven points and eight assists with no turnovers.
Jayla Kelly (13 points) and Hayleigh Breland (12) were the only players in double figures for the 49ers. Keanna Rembert also recorded nine points and nine boards. Breland added five assists and no turnovers.
The Green Wave made the most of the 20 turnovers it forced, racking up 28 points off those Charlotte miscues.
Tulane took what had been a six-point lead (22-16) through one quarter and wrested control for good by scoring 17 of the contest's next 25 points to force a 49er timeout at the 2:14 mark of the second quarter.
The halftime margin was 20 (44-24) in favor of the visitors and got no closer than 11 in the game's final 20 minutes.
The Green Wave will be back in action Wednesday when North Texas visits for a 6:30 p.m. tip inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Mean Green is off to a fantastic start, sporting an 11-4 overall and a 3-0 league mark, following its 73-71 win at Memphis on Saturday.
NOTES
Like so many other Tulane opponents, Charlotte found the going rough from the outside, making just five of its 24 shots there (20.8 percent). The Green Wave leads the league protecting the perimeter, limiting the opposition to a league-best 25 percent.
As a team, the Green Wave made 17 of its 20 free throw attempts (85 percent) on Saturday and has connected on 34 of 41 attempts (82.9 percent) there in its last two outings.
The last time Tulane had won its first two AAC road games prior to Saturday was January 5, 2020 at Wichita State (61-56) and January 15, 2020 at SMU (67-66).
