Tulane Suffers Sweep Against Blazers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tulane volleyball (9-10, 1-7) was beaten 0-3 by the UAB Blazers (8-11, 1-6) on the Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama.
The loss marked sixth consecutive defeat for the Green Wave and dropped the team to 1-3 on the road this season including 0-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, UAB earned its first victory of the season against league competition snapping a seven-match losing streak.
Avery Burks once again paced the Wave on offense recording a match-high 17 kills on Friday night. The performance marked the 17th time this season she has tallied double figures in kills including seven times in Tulane's first eight conference matches. She was primarily set up by Zoe Rachow who led the Green Wave with 23 assists to go along with six digs and a pair of kills.
Defensively, Sabrina Skyers and Amelia Haggins led five players for Tulane with at least one block against the Blazers. Skyers led the way with five total blocks followed by three from Haggins at the net. Burks and Maddy McLin each added a pair of blocks while Rachow posted one.
The Green Wave claimed the early advantage in the opening set scoring the first three points of the night before UAB started to find its rhythm. The Wave and the Blazers quickly exchanged the lead three times until UAB pushed in front for good to eventually take the first set 25-19.
Tulane started the second set hot as well until the Blazers scored six unanswered points to pull in front 6-3. The deficit reached as many as nine points for the Green Wave before Tulane ultimately dropped the set 20-25.
The momentum remained with UAB moving into the third set as the Wave fell behind to open the frame. Tulane did not back down eventually taking the lead on two occasions at 8-7 and 9-8. However, the Green Wave was unable to hold onto the lead as UAB stormed back to down Tulane 16-25 in the set.
UP NEXT
Tulane will be back on the next weekend as it visits Wichita State and Rice on Friday and Sunday, October 24 and 26. The match between the Green Wave and the Shockers is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and the rematch against the Owls is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
