
Baseball Drops 2-1 Series Opener To Pepperdine

MALIBU, CA – The Tulane baseball team (7-2) suffered only the team's second loss of the season, this one in a walk-off fashion, by a 2-1 margin to Pepperdine (2-8) on Friday afternoon at Eddie D. Field Stadium in the opener of the three-game series.
The game was tied at one and decided in the ninth inning as Joe Cardinale drove in the winner with his single through the infield with the bases loaded to end the game. The Waves had loaded the bases in the frame on back-to-back walks and a bunt single to start the ninth.
Jacob Moore (1-1) took the loss for Tulane as he allowed one run in one plus innings of work on the mound with a pair of walks. The win was earned by Pepperdine's Collin Valentine (1-1) as he threw two scoreless relief innings. Luc Fladda started and pitched exceptionally well for Tulane in going seven innings with seven strikeouts and only one run allowed. Pepperdine's Tommy Scavone also pitched well in the no-decision with seven innings, one run allowed and three strikeouts.
Matthias Haas led the offense for Tulane with three hits including a pair of doubles. Michael Lombardi had a hit and scored the team's run in the opening inning. Kaikea Harrison and Tanner Chun had the team's other hits.
Pepperdine's Nick Uphill was the only Waves player with multiple hits with a pair of singles.
Pepperdine outhit Tulane 8-6 in the game. They also drew four walks to zero for the Green Wave.
Tulane struck first with a run in the first inning as Haas drove in Lombardi with a double. The team looked poised to add on with two runners on and one out but were unable to come up with the big hit.
The Waves tied it up in the bottom of the frame on a RBI ground out from Max Aude.
Next, Tulane plays the second game against the Waves starting at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 1 before wrapping up the series on Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m.
