
Baseball Takes Series With 5-4 Sunday Victory Over Xavier

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team (15-5) won the team's fourth series of the season with a 5-4 back-and-fourth home victory over Xavier (8-13) on Sunday on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tayler Montiel (1-0) earned the victory with three innings of relief in which he surrendered just one hit and one unearned run with four strikeouts. Michael Lombardi was called upon and delivered again in the ninth with his fifth save of the season. He struck out a pair of Musketeers and surrendered just one hit. Will Clements started for Tulane and threw three innings with one run allowed. Carter Benbrook followed with a pair of scoreless frames. Jacob Moore entered next in relief and surrendered two runs without being able to record an out but was bailed out of the frame by Montiel.
Tulane took the team's final lead in the seventh inning on a sacrifice bunt from Lombardi.
The loss went to Jake Hooker (0-4) as he allowed a run in 0.2 innings worked. Ben Webber started for Xavier and earned a tough luck no decision in surrendering four unearned runs in six innings.
Connor Rasmussen led the offense for Tulane with three hits. Nate Johnson had a pair of hits and run scored. Gavin Schulz, Matthias Haas and Hugh Pinkney all registered a hit. Schulz, Rasmussen, Lombardi, Pinkney and Tanner Chun all tallied a run scored.
The Musketeers scored first with a run in the opening frame on Noah Tucker's single.
Tulane took the lead with two runs in the fourth inning on a wild pitch to allow Rasmussen to score, and a fielder's choice RBI grounder from Chun to get Lombardi home.
Xavier tied the game in the sixth inning on an Issac Waschmann single. The Musketeers wrestled the lead back later in the frame on Hayden Christiansen's RBI ground out.
The back-and-forth continued in the sixth as Nate Johnson gave the Green Wave a 4-3 lead with his two-out double down the line.
The Musketeers struck for a run in the seventh on an RBI ground out by Jason Jelic to tie the score up at four all.
Lombardi gave Tulane the lead back, 5-4. in the seventh with his bunt to score Schulz from third.
Next, Tulane hosts Lamar (15-6) in a midweek on Tuesday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Connor Rasmussen extended his on-base streak to 18 with three hits in the game…It was Rasmussen's eighth multi-hit performance of the season…Michael Lombardi had the rare feat of driving in the game winning run and also picked up the save…Lombardi saved two of the three games of the series with 2.2 innings thrown and six strikeouts…He now has 10 career saves including five this season… He is just two saves from joining the top-10 at Tulane and tying Christian Colletti, D.J.
