TULANE GAME NOTES
New Orleans, LA - The Tulane baseball team (21-12, 5-4 AAC) steps out of conference play and hosts Southeastern Louisiana (25-7) on Tuesday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action on Tuesday on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network. Airtime for radio for all three games is 15 minutes before first pitch.

Tuesday is Hat Night as the first 500 fans will receive a free Tulane Baseball Pinstripe Hat. It is also Double Play Tuesday (2-for-1) plus $3 hot dogs.
Pitching Matchup
Tulane is expected to start RHP John-Paul Sauer on Tuesday. This will be Sauer's eighth appearance of the season and his first career start. The freshman is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA. He also has struck out 13 in 10.2 innings worked.
The starter on the mound for Southeastern Louisiana is expected to be RHP Chase Ambrose. Ambrose is 2-0 this season with a 2.25 ERA plus nine strikeouts in 16 innings worked. He also earned the start against Tulane earlier in the season and went 2.2 innings with a run allowed on two hits.
Scouting Southeastern Louisiana
The Lions have won seven of the team's last nine games after taking two of three from Incarnate Word over the weekend. The program has scored in double figures in runs in 10 games on the year. Giovanni Licciardi has the top batting average on the club at .375. He has 30 hits, 17 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Ryan Brome has been the team's top overall player. He is hitting .361 with 43 hits, 32 runs, 10 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 29 RBIs and 90 total bases plus a slugging percentage of .756 and an on-base percentage of .494. Dane Watts is hitting .352 with 37 hits, three home runs and 21 RBIs. Connor O'Neal has nine home runs and 29 RBIs along with 33 walks. Brennan Stuprich has been the top hurler with a 6-2 record plus 79 strikeouts in 51.0 innings worked. Brady St. Pierre is the club's closer with six saves and 21 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched. SLU has a team batting average of .300 along with 56 home runs, 55 double and 11 triples. The Lions also have a team ERA of 3.25 with 274 strikeouts in 271.1 innings worked. Bobby Barbier is in his second year as the head coach of Southeastern and is 55-35 since he took over the program after working as the leader of the program at Northwestern State.
Series History
The Green Wave and the Lions have been playing against each other since 1947. Tulane leads the all-time series 82-41. Tulane earned a 5-3 victory over the Lions earlier this season (2/19) in frigid temperatures in Hammond. The teams split the series last year with the Lions earning an 8-7 victory at home in March and Tulane picking up the 13-6 victory in April back in New Orleans.
Against the Southland Conference
The home game against Southeastern Louisiana is the seventh of nine games against a Southland Conference opponent this season for Tulane. The program defeated Southeastern Louisiana 5-3 on Feb. 19 in Hammond, Nicholls 13-3 on Feb. 25 in Thibodeaux, Nicholls again by a 9-5 score on March 11 at home in New Orleans, lost to Lamar 14-4 on March 18 in New Orleans, fell to UNO 7-6 on March 25 across town and then beat Northwestern State by an 8-4 score to improve the record to 307-164 all-time against current schools in the SLC.
Last Time Out
The Tulane baseball team (21-12, 5-4 AAC) swept both games of the team's doubleheader over Rice (7-27, 1-8 AAC) by scores of 10-3 and 6-5 on Saturday, April 5, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The second game and the sweep was secured on a dramatic walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning by Matthias Haas.
Connor Rasmussen led the offensive attack on the day with five hits. James Agabedis III totaled four hits and three RBIs. Kaikea Harrison had three hits including a double. Â Haas had three hits, two runs scored, a home run and three RBIs. Theo Bryant IV picked up three hits.
In the first game, Trey Cehajic (4-1) started for Tulane and earned the victory with five innings worked, three runs allowed with four strikeouts. Carter Benbrook worked the final four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts for the first save of his career.
Will Clements started for the Green Wave in the second game and struck out 10 while allowing just two hits and one run in 4.1 innings. Blaise Wilcenski surrendered three runs on four hits in his inning. Julius Ejike-Charles threw 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Jacob Moore was tagged with a run and struck out three in his inning. Michael Lombardi (2-0) struck out three in throwing the ninth inning. He also earned the win after Tulane's walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning.
Two Honored by the AAC – Week Nine
Junior Michael Lombardi was named to the AAC's Pitcher of the Week and junior Hugh Pinkney was selected to the Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced on April 7.
Lombardi played a direct role in three of the team's four wins on the week on the mound with two wins and a save in three appearances that covered 4.0 innings. He struck out nine while limiting opponents to a .200 batting average. He also had four hits, three doubles and an RBI as a hitter. He started his week picking up a pair of wins against No. 13 Southern Miss (4/1). He then started the contest against Northwestern State (4/2) where he went the first two hitless innings in a pitch-limit start with four strikeouts. He came in relief in the series opener against Rice (4/4) where struck out two to earn his eighth save of the season. He had two hits, two runs scored, an RBI and double in the second game of the series against Rice (4/5). Lombardi reached base safely with a walk in the series finale against Rice (4/5) and also came in relief and threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the week and on the season.
Pinkney led the offensive attack for Tulane on the 4-1 week with his .389 batting average, six runs, seven hits, a double, a home run, eight RBIs, 11 total bases, a .611 slugging percentage, three walks, a hit by pitch and an on-base percentage of .500. He reached base safely in all five games. Pinkney had a career-high three hits plus an RBI against No. 13 Southern Miss (4/1) in the team's first game against a ranked opponent. He produced a three-run double and walked in the victory over Northwestern State (4/2). Pinkney hit a grand slam and walked twice with two runs scored in the series opening game against conference rival Rice (4/4). He had a pair of hits and runs scored in the second game against the Owls (4/5). Pinkney completed his week by getting hit by a pitch in the series finale of the doubleheader against Rice (4/5).
This is the fourth weekly honor that Lombardi has earned and the first for Pinkney this season. Overall, the program has been recognized by the conference seven times on the campaign.
Notables from the Rice Series
Tayler Montiel's four innings pitched out of the bullpen in the first game (4/4) was a career high. Hugh Pinkney hit the team's third grand slam of the season (Connor Rasmussen – 1, Jackson Linn – 1 and Hugh Pinkney – 1) in the opener against Rice (4/4). Michael Lombardi's save on Friday (4/4) was his league leading eighth of the season and the 13th of his career. He is now in eighth place all by himself in the career list and one away from reaching Zach Devito (2021-22) for seventh at Tulane. His eight saves this season puts him just out of the top 10 in the single season list only two from reaching Daniel Latham (2007) and Brian Gibbs (1994). The victory in the opener (4/4) was the 77th in the Tulane career of Head Coach Jay Uhlman moving him one past David Pierce (current Rice Head Coach and former Tulane Head Coach from 2015-16) for sixth all-time at the school. James Agabedis III's four hits in the second game of the series (4/5) matched his career high. Will Clements' 10 strikeouts in the second game (4/5) were a career-high and the season-high for any Tulane pitcher. The save earned by Carter Benbrook in the first game was the first of his Tulane career. Michael Lombardi picked up a win and a save in the series. The conference sweep over Rice was a first for the program in conference action since beating then No. 6 ECU three straight from May 10-12 last season. The Tulane pitching staff recorded double digit strikeouts in both games of the doubleheader (11 – Game 1 & 17 in Game 2) on Saturday and have now reached double figures in strikeouts in 19 of the team's 33 games (four more than the team had in 62 games last season). The program's 17 strikeouts against Rice in the second game were the most for the program since getting 19 against Penn during the 2023 season (3/10/23). The team's 20 hits in the first game were the most for the program since also getting 20 during the 2021 season against Louisiana (2/21/21). Tulane has now won all six home weekend series this season and seven in a row dating back to last season.

Following the Southeastern Louisiana contest, Tulane gets back into league play and takes on UAB (17-12, 2-4 AAC) for a three-game set from April 11-13 before wrapping up the long stretch at home by hosting UNO on April 15.
