Tulane Game Notes
New Orleans - The Tulane baseball team (30-21, 13-11 AAC) returns home to play host to Charlotte (32-20, 15-9 AAC) for the final regular season series of the season from May 15-17 on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The seeding for next week's AAC Tournament in Clearwater, Florida is still up for grabs with Tulane having the ability to finish anywhere from second – sixth depending on the results of the weekend. The first and second games of the series on Thursday and Friday against the 49ers begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday's game will feature a pre-game ceremony of the team's 21 graduates. The Saturday game has a first pitch of 1 p.m. with a post-game ceremony for the team's 14 seniors.
Media
The series will be streamed on ESPN+. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network. Airtime for radio is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Promotions
On Thursday the promotion is Tulane Staff Appreciation Day. On Friday the promotion is Graduation Night where 21 members of the Tulane baseball program will be recognized on the field prior to the game. Also Friday will be the final Friday Night Bingo of the season. Saturday is Senior Day where the team's 14 seniors will be recognized in the post-game for their accomplishments in a Tulane baseball uniform. . The day is also a Riptide Kids Club Day where all Kids Club members receive free game admission, will be able to run the bases following the game and there will be a giveaway of collectible Tulane Baseball cards plus a postgame autograph session with Jackson Linn, Tracy Mitchem, Gavin Schulz, Matthias Haas and Carter Benbrook.
Pitching Matchup
Tulane is slated to start lefty Luc Fladda in the opener on Thursday evening against the 49ers. Fladda has been the team's series opening starter in each of the first 13 weekends of the season. He is 4-5 on the campaign with 60 strikeouts in 67.2 innings worked and only 11 walks. He has worked at least seven innings in four starts this year (vs. Pepperdine – 2/28, vs. Xavier – 3/14, vs. UAB – 4/11 and vs. ECU – 4/25). The 6-1 lefthander went 5-3 last year in his first season as a member of the Green Wave, sporting an earned run average of 4.77 with 61 strikeouts and 21 walks in 83 innings.
On Friday, in the second game of the series, Tulane hasn't announced the team's expected starter.
The Saturday starter for Tulane is to be determined at this point depending on the results and bullpen usage in the two earlier games of the series.
Charlotte is starting Blake Gillespie on Thursday. Gillespie is 6-4 with a 2.65 ERA. This will be his 14th start of the season. He leads the club with 88.1 innings pitched and 112 strikeouts. He has only walked 17 and opponents are batting .194 against him. The rest of the weekend rotation for the 49ers is to be determined.
Scouting Charlotte
Charlotte has won six straight including a 29-5 mauling of UNC Asheville on Tuesday and sweep of UAB at home last weekend. The program has been led offensively by Cody Gunderson. Gunderson is hitting .331 with 31 runs, 52 hits, eight home runs and 30 RBIs. Dawson Bryce has also been impressive with a .324 batting average, 42 runs, 67 hits, 14 doubles, 12 home runs, 45 RBIs and 119 total bases. He was also just named the AAC's Player of the Week on Monday. Connor Maryniak has 10 home runs while Carson Bayne has nine home runs this season. The pitching staff has been led by Blake Gillespie. Gillespie leads the conference in strikeouts and ranks fifth nationally. Andrew Kribbs is 3-2 on the year with a 4.32 ERA plus 59 strikeouts in 58.1 innings worked. Mike Szturma is another regular weekend starter. He is 3-0 on the year with a 4.02 ERA. He has struck out 32 in 40 innings pitched.
Adam Stanton has led a strong relief core with a 4-1 record plus 30 strikeouts in 32.1 innings worked. The team's closer, Joseph Taylor has seven saves plus 71 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched in relief. Robert Woodard is in his sixth season in charge of the program.
Series History
This will be the 59th – 61st time the two schools have played against each other all-time. Tulane leads the all-time series by a 34-24 count since the first meeting 1992. Last season Tulane ended the regular season taking 2-of-3 against the 49ers and then beat Charlotte by a 7-5 score in the conference tournament. All four of the games were decided by two runs or less. The 2024 meeting was the first for the teams since 2014 when both schools were CUSA rivals. This year's meetings in New Orleans is the first time that the teams have played at Turchin Stadium since 2002.
Last Time Out
The Tulane baseball team (30-21, 13-11 AAC) lost the series finale to Memphis (21-30, 8-16 AAC) by a 15-6 margin on Sunday afternoon, May 11, at FedEd Park. The team surrendered eight runs in the first two innings and then drew to within three runs in the fifth but could get no closer in the defeat.
Blaise Wilcenski (5-4) started for Tulane and allowed five two-out runs in his only inning of work to take the loss. He surrendered all the damage on four hits. Will Clements was the second man in. He only lasted 0.1 of an inning while allowing three runs. Gavin Smith helped settle the game with 1.1 scoreless. He was followed by J.D. Rodriguez. Rodgriguez surrendered a run in 1.1 innings worked. Jacob Moore was then inserted as the team's fifth pitcher of the game. He allowed five hits, five runs (four earned) with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Julius Ejike-Charles was the sixth pitcher of the afternoon for Tulane. He threw a scoreless 0.1 of an inning. Garrett Payne entered the game to start the seventh. He was the team's seventh pitcher of the game. Payne allowed a run in two innings on the mound with four strikeouts to finish things out for Tulane.
Gavin Schulz and Kaikea Harrison both had a pair of hits. Schulz also scored a run and had an RBI. Jason Wachs had a run, a hit, an RBI and a walk. Connor Rasmussen totaled two hits and an RBI. Matthias Haas had two hits including a double plus an RBI. Theo Bryant IV had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. James Agabedis III scored a pair of runs plus totaled a hit. Nate Johnson drew a walk.
Notables from the Memphis Series
The loss in the third game to Memphis dropped Tulane to 76-51 all-time against the Tigers. The loss made Tulane 9-4 in the third game of a weekend series this season. Jason Wachs extended his on-base streak to a career high 19 games with a hit and a walk. He also now has hit in 16 straight games which is both a career high and the high for any Tulane player this season. In his on-base streak, Wachs is hitting .435 with 20 runs, 27 hits, nine doubles, six RBIs and 15 walks. The Green Wave upped their record to 4-2 in three-run games this season and 8-7 on Saturdays overall with a 3-0 victory over Memphis (5/10). The Tulane pitching staff struck out double digits on Friday (5/9) (10) and then again on Saturday (5/10) (11). It was the 24th and then the 25th time the team has had double digital strikeouts this season (10 more than in all of last season). The save by Michael Lombardi in the second game of the series (5/10) was his conference leading 11th of the season. It was the 16th save of his career and second in as many days. He is now four saves from reaching Todd Ardoin (1995-96) for sixth. His 11 saves this season places him tied for eighth all-time at Tulane in a single season along with Christian Colletti (2017) and Brandon Belanger (2000). He is only one save from moving into a tie for fifth place in a single season. Trey Cehajic's five wins this year with the fifth earned in the middle game against Memphis (5/10) tie him for the team lead this season along with Blaise Wilcenski. Cehajic's seven strikeouts against the Tigers matched his career high set against Loyola Marymount earlier this season (2/22). The Green Wave improved their record to 6-3 in one-run games this season and 8-5 on Fridays overall with the 3-2 victory over Memphis in the first game (5/9).
A Pair Weekly Honored by the AAC
The Tulane baseball team saw pair of players named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced on May 12.
Jason Wachs, a freshman from Pembroke Pines, Fla., continued to spark the lineup at the top of the order as he hit .538 with seven hits, a double, two walks and two RBIs. He also had eight total bases, a slugging percentage of .615 and an on-base percentage of .600. Wachs recorded a pair of three-hit games for Tulane in the team's victories over the Tigers. Those were his third and fourth three-hit games of the season. He now has 13 multiple hit performances on the campaign. Wachs also ran his on-base streak to 19 consecutive games (best on the team this season) and his hitting streak to 16 (best on the team this season). During the 19 games of the on-base streak, Wachs is hitting .435 with 20 runs, 27 hits, nine doubles, eight RBIs, a slugging percentage of .581, 15 walks and on-base percentage of .538 with three stolen bases. Wachs also leads the club this season in batting average (.343) and on-base percentage (.474).
Michael Lombardi, a junior from Pound Ridge, NY, continued his run as the top reliever in the conference with a pair of saves against the Tigers over the weekend. He appeared in a pair of games and threw two innings with five strikeouts while limiting Memphis to one hit and one walk in earning his 10th and 11th saves of the season. The saves moved him into a tie for eighth place all-time at Tulane in single season saves and into seventh all by himself in career saves at the school with 16. This season, Lombardi is 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA in 20 games. He has thrown 29 innings and totaled 55 strikeouts against just 15 hits allowed while limiting opponents to a .155 batting average against.
This is the first weekly recognition for Wachs this season. This marks the fifth time that Lombardi has been recognized weekly by the conference on the campaign. Overall, the program has been recognized by the conference 10 times on the year.

Following the Charlotte series, Tulane heads to Clearwater, Florida to participate in the AAC Tournament from May 20-25. Tulane is the reigning AAC Tournament Champions and are attempting to become the only team to ever three-peat. Depending on the results of this weekend, Tulane will finish and be seeded anywhere from second to sixth.
