Green Wave Drops Overtime Heartbreaker
Jan 31, 2026 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – After fighting back from an early deficit, the Tulane women's basketball team used a clutch three by Kanija Daniel to force overtime Saturday night against Temple in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. However, the Owls edged out the Green Wave in the extra period as Tulane fell 67-65. The Wave moves to 8-12 (3-5 American) as the Owls improve to 10-11 (4-5 American).
Â
Tulane held a shooting edge in the contest, posting a 39.1 percent clip to Temple's 36.6 percent mark. However, the Owls put home three more three-pointers, 7-4. Temple won the glass 47-40 and had a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass. Tulane dominated with five blocks to Temple's one, but turnovers proved to be the difference maker. The Wave committed 21 turnovers while forcing 18, and the Owls converted those into 22 points off turnovers with Tulane notching just 13.
Â
Dyllan Hanna and Amira Mabry led the charge for Tulane with 23 and 17 points, respectively. Hanna's tally marks her first-career 20-point performance as she added eight rebounds to top the team and fall just short of a double-double. Mabry finished the night five points short of 1,000 for her career, and she secured five boards with a block and two steals. Kanija Daniel had nine points to just miss double figures. She dished eight assists for a new career best while matching her career high with three blocks alongside a team-high trio of steals. Kendall Sneed added three steals to tie for the team lead, and she dished four assists.
Â
Temple scored the first four points before Kendall Sneed's layup got Tulane on the board. The Owls were hot out of the gates, earning an early 11-2 lead. Amira Mabry broke the run with a layup and a foul shot, setting a tone as 40 of Tulane's 65 total points came in the paint. The Wave chipped away, and Kanija Daniel's jumper in the final 20 seconds pulled Tulane to within 13-11 at the end of the opening quarter.
Â
The Owls opened the second with a pair of threes in the opening four minutes, but Dyllan Hanna had back-to-back layups to keep the Wave within a point. However, Temple put home a layup and three to pull ahead 24-18. Late in the quarter, Mabry connected from distance for Tulane's first triple of the night. Tulane collected four free throws to close the half and entered the break trailing just 26-25.
Â
After trading buckets to kick off the third, Temple put home a jumper that Mabry followed with a three, tying the contest at 30-all. After trading baskets once more, Hanna connected inside to provide Tulane its first lead of the night at the 6:13 mark. Hanna remained hot with a score, and she added a free throw for a four-point lead, but a Temple three trimmed the margin back down to a point (37-36). The Owls regained the advantage with a three, but Tulane pushed back and pulled within one after a Mecailin Marshall score. The programs traded buckets in the closing minute of the frame as the game entered the fourth with Temple in front just 44-43.
Â
The final regulation frame opened with back-to-back Owl layups, but Mabry put home her third trey of the contest to keep Tulane in striking distance. After several minutes of both defenses holding firm, Hanna went inside to tie the game at 48 with 5:30 on the clock. Temple added a three to pull back in front, and CC Mays's foul shots were nixed by a Temple tip-in. Shiloh Kimpson scored a driving lay-in, but Temple again had a response. With 1:17 remaining, Hanna kept up her torrid scoring pace with another inside bucket to bring the Wave within 55-54. Temple gained some breathing room with a layup at the 12-second mark, widening the score to 57-54. After a Wave timeout, Daniel put up a contested three that swished through and tied the game with only three seconds to go. Temple's final effort fell short, and the game went to overtime tied at 57-57.
Â
Tulane started the extra five minutes hot, as Mays and Daniel scored back-to-back baskets. However, Temple notched a three before Hanna again went inside. Four foul shots pushed the Owls in front by a point, but Hanna again scored in the paint to flip the lead back in Tulane's hands, 65-64, with 1:52 to go. Defenses for both teams clamped down until an untimely foul put Temple on the line with 11 seconds remaining. Thankfully for the Wave, the Owl player made just one of her shots, leaving the score tied at 65-all. Tulane took a timeout to advance the ball, but an unfortunate turnover off the inbound led to a Temple layup with five seconds to go that proved to be game winner. The Wave's last shot missed the mark, and the Owls sneaked out a 67-65 overtime win.
