Baseball Drops Series Finale at USF, 10-8
Mar 31, 2018 | Baseball
TAMPA, Fla. – USF scored three runs in the eighth inning to overtake Tulane 10-8 in the finale of their three-game American Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon at USF Baseball Stadium.
Tulane scored four runs in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead, but it was not enough as the Green Wave fell to 12-17 overall and 3-3 in The American. With the win, the Bulls claimed the series and improved to 20-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The teams totaled 21 hits and seven errors on Saturday.
Freshman left fielder David Bedgood went 3-for-5 and scored two runs in his second three-hit game of the series. Sophomore designated hitter Grant Mathews hit two RBI doubles and junior center fielder Grant Witherspoon hit a pair of RBI singles while junior right fielder Ty Johnson singled, doubled a run home and scored twice.
"The kids fought hard today," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "It was the first time we've been able to come out and generate a little offense (in a series game three) in a while. I though Pellerin did a heck of a job in relief. Right now, I just feel like we're finding ways to come out on the short end of the stick."
Freshman Connor Pellerin pitched 3.1 innings after coming in to start the fourth in relief of sophomore starter Keagan Gillies. USF reliever Andrew Perez (4-2) pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief and earned the win while junior Will McAffer (1-1) took the loss.
Tulane collected 12 hits but committed three miscues that led to four unearned runs while USF tallied nine hits and committed four errors that also led to four unearned runs.
Tulane took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Mathews doubled down the left field line to score Bedgood, who reached on a one-out single.
USF scored three unearned runs on two miscues in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. An error allowed the first batter to reach, then a throwing error allowed two runs to score before a sacrifice fly made it 3-1. The Bulls added two runs in the third when, with the bases loaded, a run scored on a grounder to first, but an errant throw on a double play attempt allowed another run to score to make it 5-1.
The Green Wave immediately got three runs back in the top of the fourth to cut it to 5-4. Sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo hit an RBI single to score Bedgood, and Johnson was able to score when the throw hit Gozzo as he crossed first base.
The Bulls extended their lead to 7-4 in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles by shortstop Coco Montes and center fielder Duke Stunkel.
Junior first baseman Trevor Jensen started the top of the seventh with a single and scored on Johnson's double down the line in right. Mathews looped a double over third base to score Johnson and cut the deficit to 7-6. Mathews then scored the tying run when an errant throw on Gozzo's grounder to second went into the first base dugout. Witherspoon gave Tulane the 8-7 lead when he shot a single up the middle to plate Gozzo.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulls took a 10-8 lead when two RBI singles and a wild pitch scored three runs.
Tulane returns home to play host to UNO at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
