NEW ORLEANS – Coming off a series win in Ohio, the Tulane baseball team will return to action on Tuesday to close out a string of five on the road with the New Orleans Privateers at Maestri Field beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The annual Pelican Cup series will begin with two of the three games near the banks of Lake Pontchartrain at the UNO campus this month, with the final game of the series returning to Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in May. The Privateers currently hold the trophy, taking two of three against the Green Wave last season.
Tuesday night's game will air on WRBH in New Orleans with Todd Graffagnini providing play-by-play of all the action from Maestri Field. A link to the stream and live stats provided by New Orleans can be found on the schedule page at TulaneGreenWave.com.
The Green Wave improved their record to 19-9 on the season after taking two of three last weekend at the University of Cincinnati, currently sitting third in The American after the solid start to league play. Tulane outscored the Bearcats 27-5 in a doubleheader sweep on Friday, falling just short on Sunday in a 7-6 loss to end the weekend.
Tulane went 12-7 during the month of March, winning three of their last five overall and seven of the last 10 games heading into a brand-new month and the season halfway complete. The month of April has the squad playing nine of their 17 games on the road beginning with the Privateers on Tuesday night.
Junior Jonathon Artigues led Tulane at the plate in four games last week earning a .471 batting average with a double and a triple among his eight hits. He was one of four players that had at least five hits during the week, as Tulane out-hit their opponents 39-19.
Among that offensive output was the number of walks the team received, 28 in all, with David Bedgood and Grant Mathews each being walked five times, as three of Kody Hoese's four came in the last game against Cincinnati on Sunday.
The Tulane pitching staff was stout in striking out 12 Bearcat batters on Sunday, paced by Brendan Cellucci's career high eight in three-plus innings. Opponents hit just .248 against Tulane, striking out 37 times and scoring just 19 runs.
Tulane will look to keep its unblemished record against teams in the Southland Conference this season, with wins over Nicholls, Lamar and McNeese State all to date.
New Orleans is 14-13 on the year after dropping all three games to the UIW Cardinals in San Antonio. The Privateers are 3-9 in Southland play this season and plays Jackson State on Wednesday before taking on Tulane's next midweek opponent in Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game series this weekend at Maestri Field.
Tulane is 81-64 all-time against the Privateers in the series history, as the 81 wins are the third most against any team the Green Wave has played in the history of the program.
