Baseball Claims Series With 7-0 win Over Jaguars
Mar 7, 2020 | Baseball
BATON ROUGE, La. – Tulane starting pitcher Jack Aldrich mowed down nine batters in six innings of work and the Green Wave offense came alive late to earn a 7-0 win over the Southern Jaguars to claim the series at Lee Hines Field in Baton Rouge Saturday afternoon.
Â
Holding just a 2-0 lead since the second inning, Tulane (12-2) came alive offensively in the seventh and plated five runs on four hits to extend the lead for good and leave the game for the pitching staff to finish in a strong way, earning the team's third shutout of the year.
Â
Aldrich (2-0) stifled the Southern (6-8) batters through much of his six innings of work Saturday, retiring the first 10 batters he saw in the game and finishing with a career-best nine strikeouts, while allowing three hits with one walk. Luke Jannetta (1) continued his torrid start, earning the save by pitching the final three innings where he struck out four and walked zero.
Â
Catcher Luis Aviles finished the day leading the team with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a run scored, followed by Ethan Groff and Collin Burns with two hits each. Groff had a double, triple and two RBI, while Burns had a double and RBI and run scored.
Â
The Green Wave finished with 11 hits in the victory.
Â
Aviles opened the Tulane second with a single to left to open the Green Wave register, with Frankie Niemann drawing a walk to put two on. Jonathon Artigues was able to produce a sacrifice bunt to advance the two over, and Groff did the rest smashing a double to left to bring in both to make it 2-0 Tulane.
Â
With an out in the seventh, Groff came through with a triple over the head of the right fielder to reach base, eventually coming in after a Burns double down the right field line to make it 3-0. After a walk, Hudson Haskin smoked a double to right center to plate burns and make it 4-0.
Â
A wild pitch scored Ty Johnson from third to make it 5-0, allowing Haskin to move to third. On the next play, a failed pick off attempt to first went high and both Haskin and Trevor Minder came around to score to push the Green Wave lead to 7-0.
